The Morganville Vampires Series
This series was suggested to me about a year or two ago and has been sitting on my Wish List ever since. I now have a gift card that I can use to cover most (but not all) of the cost of the 8 book box set (Kindle Edition). If I like the series, then this is a pretty good deal, as most of the individual books are $7.99 each.
So, I'm looking for feedback on the series as a whole. Other series that I've liked, that I think might be similar, are: The Dresden Files The Hollows The Southern Vampire (or Sookie Stackhouse) - [I liked the first 8 better than book #9 - waiting for the paperback edition of book 13 before I read the others] Twilight [Specifically Books 3 & 4] I also like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and am currently enjoying the Parasol Protectorate series, but despite their having vampires, I doubt either is similar to Morganville, although I could be wrong. Well my first thought is that Morganville is more of a Young Adult series so it's a bit different than the ones you mention (well Twilight is YA, but different). Not a bad thing, but something to be aware of. The main character is sixteen and going to college early (genius type).
Can't give feedback on the entire series, but I read the first six or eight and liked them well enough. I'm also a fan of Dresden, Hollows & Southern Vamp (although the last few haven't been as good IMO). I'd place these right there with those as far as my likes although I like Dresden & the Hollows a bit more. BTW the Sookie books are done, the series is finished in case you didn't know. You're correct that Morganville is nothing like Black Dagger Brotherhood. Last edited by AnemicOak; 11-25-2013 at 06:23 PM. |

![]() Dresden is my absolute favorite of the lot. I think both The Hollows and Black Dagger would be tied for 2nd. Yes, I know the 13th book is out, but I'm waiting for the paperback edition. I should specify that in my post. |

I really like Dresden, Hollows, BDB and even Sookie. I strongly prefer books written for adults so I am very sensitive to a YA "voice". I started the first Morganville Vampires book and stopped pretty quickly. I found the main character very young, living in an institutional "school" setting with the typical bully character often seen in YA so it wasn't something that was going to hold my interest. I would suggest sampling the series before buying the whole set. They are all available at my library, so that might be an option for you for the first book.

![]() A YA voice won't be a problem for me; sophomoric behavior really only bugs me in books written for adults about adults - unless you have a 12 year old acting like a 5 year old. I enjoyed books/series like The Mysterious Benedict Society & NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society (which reminds me, I should read the other ones). Things that would bother me, besides really poor writing) would be a combination of the following: Whininess Complete cluelessness (A.K.A - TSTL - Too stupid to live) Chronic indecisiveness "Mean girl" syndrome with no consequences Forced interactions Cliche'd/Predictable outcomes (to the point of being boring) I might even be able to get through the book/series if it only displayed one of these traits, depending on severity of course. |
