Search Engine - another feature all ebooks should have
A simple search engine lets you find your place in a book, or a quote or a topic in any book in the currently loaded library.
I wonder how much memory it would need? James - who keeps all his ebook files in his computer as well as in his ebook readers and uses Google Desktop a lot |

Well, it's more a hardware/software issue than ebook issue. The Kindle has a search capability, and it does take some time to index something when you first put it on the device but after that it's great - search will give you results from the book, dictionary, and every other book on your device.
Pretty handy. One of the reasons I picked the Kindle. |

The biggest hurdle for most of this newest batch of devices is entering the string you want to search for. Obviously this doesn't apply to Kindle, since it has a keyboard, but entering a search string on the Sony or Cybook device would be a bit difficult. While some sort of scheme could be worked out to manage the task, it would be fairly cumbersome, at best.

The Sony could do it if you did it like on a telephone keypad. Like you enter text with the average cell phone.
