Download metadata - but write only empty fields?

As the title says, is it possible to download metadata but only set them on empty fields or the id? the luxury-version: is it possible to get a preview of the metadata with checkboxes to allow/prevent copy to the selected book?

i am really annoyed that title, author, tags and date gets overwritten all the time...

No.

Configure the Metadata download to only update the fields you wish to be updated, see attached.

I never have the Title or Author downloaded and I always have the tags downloaded because I use the Goodreads metadata source plugin to download tags from Goodreads.

You can configure what metadata to update. For instance not to update title and author.

Also if you download metadata for a single book you can preview and select what to use.

@DoctorOhh
ok, that won't override title/author anymore. may be my idea could be a feature in future goodreads is also a good suggestion - but sadly it provides only english content...

@Adoby
i have changed my settings as you and DoctorOhh told me. but how do i preview the metadata download? if i click 'download metadata' the window pops up and show me matching entries from the configured providers. but if i click ok the selected entry will be applied without preview and without the chance to disable some of the content...

I wanted your feature, but settled for disabling author and title

Use the Download Metadata (Crtl+D) But always use the 'Review Metadata'
Then use the field copy arrows to overwrite (to Keep the existing) the populated fields on the left (blanks get overwritten with values on the right)
You can hand edit only the Left side. This includes deleting bad data BUT There does not appear a way to stop the automatic copy to a blank
if the existing data is wrong .

You will see a Next Button if you used the Ctrl-D with multiple books which allows you to hand process each one

- All of the people I have introduced to calibre find this 'variant' preferable to the one in Edit Metadata. They especially like that it allows them to view the book in the Review step.

To help overcome limitations, such as the one mentioned by theducks, it would be good if the Mark Book feature was available (button next to View Book), you could put a note as to why it's Marked at the top of Comments.

@theducks
I never noticed the review metadata button. That is handy dandy.

@shadowtree
If I want to download only a certain field(s) and I wanted it only for blank ones, I would select tags:false or comments:false etc. Then I would select all CTL+A, CTL+D, configure download and only have the appropriate box(s) checked. Takes less then 20 seconds to set up usually.

your suggestion is pretty close to what i was searching for. two buttons in this window, 'copy all' and 'copy only if blank' would be nice^^ but why is CTRL+D/'download metadata and covers' so different from (my way) 'edit metadata' -> 'download metadata'...?

is it possible to always open the review-window (without being asked for)? is it possible to customize this window (why is the cover shown when i am in metadata-only-mode)?

Copy all would basically leave you with the original (right side)
Unless... (Only for ) 'copy all' did not copy a Blank from the right, which would wipe new data on the left.

to an option to always review

The button is not part of that download Path

It is only from the MAIN screen Menu (ctrl+d)

I have to check this out when I get home. I've never seen this option and it sounds useful.

The difference I perceive between the Metadata edit DOWNLOAD is:
MDE download allows the choice (picking) of source returned results and covers
ctrl-d /with review allows the retention of existing fields, but only supplies the Primary(?) return.
ctrl-d w/review destination, does not include a pulldown of existing (Authors,series,tags) the is on the MDE form

Each has its use
