Zero jobs and no spin

I am finding repeatedly that I dump a collection of PDF files in the temp directory and status is shown as zero jobs and the wheel is not spinning. I do not know if the program has got stuck or whatever so I click something and get the message Not responding.
I then shut down the program through Task manager and start again. I then find that some of the PDFs have been moved to appropriate folders (processed).

Clearly the program is working in the background so why does it confuse by showing no jobs? Would it not be better to have some indication?

It does show jobs at some stage but not quite sure what triggers this.

Any guidance please.

This may be the old 'Read metadata from PDF' issue.

Preferences: Plugins: Metadata reader plugins: Read PDF metadata: Disable (button)

Automatic adding of books does not create jobs, unless you have told calibre to auto-convert added books.

Automatic adding is not designed for processing large numbers of files. It is designed to run silently. If you want to process large numbers of files, use the normal add process, which will give you feedback while the add is happening.
