what is jailbreak and what is duokan

I'm new in this field. I've Kindle K3 v.3.4
I heard about Duokan and jailbreak. but i don't know what is the difference.
and what is the latest version.

Jailbreak -> Simple hack to allow installation of custom programs by means of the kindles own update system

Duokan -> A proprietary (?) chinese replacement for the kindle OS (Or most of the high level stuff).

Most (if not all) hacks mentioned on this forum will not work on duokan.
Duokan os is not created by the members of this forum.

.... and encrypted Amazon ebooks cant be read under Duokan. You'd have to reboot to the Kindle OS.

Duokan is not an operating system (even though a lot of people incorrectly call it one), but a new set of application software. Installing it has no effect on the o/s, which is still Linux.

In general (the K3 is old, I don't recall the details), Duokan will not install on a device which has our jailbreak system installed.

What reason do you have for wanting to install Duokan?

If only for its handling of e-book displays - - -
Then I suggest that you try one of our e-book reader applications.

The forum members here have produced some very good e-book readers.

The Duokan developers would like to think so.
Reading this forum you will find some very strong opinions expressed by the supporters of Open Source Software (myself included) on this subject.

{*} We have two "menu systems" here -
The KUAL (cool) application launcher is text-based and works on all Kindles except the K1;
The "Kindle Menu" system, which is image based, very easy to use, but only works on the K5-Touch and the K5-Paperwhite(gen 1) devices.
(Well, three, but KUAL has pretty much replaced the original launcher system.)

Second: I want to have more features in my kindle. like RTL and Arabic mobis and EPUB. I want more features in PDFs like cropping and editing text as sony e reader.
and easy media player
I don't know which one is better for me.

Any advice?

Duokan and the jailbreak are conpletely different: the jailbreak frees your kinle to allow custom install packages, while Duokan is a set of applications no better than Amazon's, locked in the prison that is called closed source binaries. So install the jailbreak or ask twobob if the duokan team would like to give out the source code (choose the first option).

Mmh I must admit that on my kindle 3 I've both duokan and JB stuff... And I think that, for kindle 3 only, Duokan represent a really nice option, absolutely faster respect to the Amazon choice, and with better pdf tools. Moreover, there aren't so many useful app for Kindle 3 with JB only...

So, my opinion is: if you are using kindle Touch or PW, you don't need Duokan, but if you are using kindle 3, install both Duokan and jailbreak and it will be great

Want Doukan support?
Do you know Chinese? If not, learn it.
Then join the Doukan forum.

Since you know Arabic, Chinese shouldn't be that hard.
Not that I am an expert, the only Arabic I know is the numerals.
But I am in the habit of writing them LTR, most significant digit first, not RTL, least significant digit first.

Please give KindlePDFViewer a try.
It's superior to Duokan IMHO. It supports DjVu, XPS, CBZ, FB2, TXT, HTML, RTF, CHM, EPUB, DOC, MOBI a ZIP and even PDF reflow, PDF cropping and such.
And it's open source.
