PostMedia Recipes

PostMedia is gradually phasing out its "Today's Paper" index pages (which corresponded to the paper edition of its newspapers). This invalidates the recipes I created for these papers, so here are updated recipes that visit the various website sections for the content for the major PostMedia newspapers.

Calgary Herald
Edmonton Journal
Montreal Gazette
Ottawa Citizen
Vancouver Province
Vancouver Sun

It works now thanks so much for your time.
Is there a reason the file size jumped from 1mb to 12mb?

There is much more content now that much of the the web site is being downloaded versus just the print edition contents.

I'm trying to use your Edmonton Journal recipe, but ebook-convert is giving me a "failed to compile" error. Any idea what the problem is?

I just ran the Edmonton Journal recipe from the calibre UI and from ebook-convert with no problems. I suspect there is an issue with your recipe file. Try pulling it out of the calibre installation again.

Not likely to have any impact on calibre downloads since I believe the paywall uses JavaScript and cookies

I ended up having to install the updated calibre, but that fixed the problem. Thanks!

I've noticed that Postmedia has not removed their 'today's paper' pages (or at least the Vancouver Sun has not). It would be nice if the original recipes could be restored to the default installation of Calibre - as they are much better.

Note: one thing that changed this past week was a minor change in the format of the news stories (again, at least for the Vancouver Sun) - 'storycontent' is now 'story_content'

They will eventually (they announced as much). If you prefer the old recipes you could retrieve them from bazaar. I'm not convinced they are "much" better since the new recipes have all of that content plus much more, but then that is what calibre's custom recipe capability is for.

Thank you for responding - I really appreciate that you created these recipes.

But 'the new recipes have all of that content plus much more' doesn't seem to be the case.

This is what comes up for news stories (just news for the sake of discussion) with the new recipe:

Coast Guard spending $50 million to remove oil from U.S. ship that sank in 1946 off B.C.
Toronto city hall 'coup d'etat' chaos as Mayor Rob Ford stripped of many of his powers
B.C. announces cuts to ferry routes, no more free rides for seniors

Pipeline proposal through grizzly sanctuary no longer on the table: BC Environment Minister
Spanish court orders arrest of ex-Chinese president Jiang in probe of alleged Tibet genocide
Vaughn Palmer: Ferry-riding seniors first in line for ‘tough decisions’

And this is what comes up using the old 'Today's Paper' recipe:

New coal terminal passes environment test
Coast Guard launches $50m clean-up operation
Western forest products - 'Being more efficient important part of being globally competitive'
Gambling seen as revenue source
B.C. to cut free ferry rides

As you can see, there's a lot more content using 'Today's Paper' (about 3x as much)

You have to look in all of the individual sections to see all of the articles. What you have compared here is only what was on the web front page.

The "today's paper" view includes all of the sections from today's paper on one web page, which was parsed by the old recipe into individual sections.

So to compare "apples to apples" you need to compare the contents of ALL of the sections with what today's paper shows--and I think you will see there's a lot more in the current recipe.

No - I'm looking at the contents of the file generated by the recipe. The news stories I listed were the ones in the file - the recipe only seems to be returning content from the front web page. Perhaps something has changed in their website structure that breaks the new recipe.

The section urls have changed. I'll check all the postmedia papers and post updated recipes later this week.
