I've gone over to the dark side!
Well, I've done it. I put my order in last night for a Dell Axim x30 and will probably have it in a week or so. I could no longer resist the siren call of that big screen and wifi. I'm using preemptive birthday money: my bday is not until the end of October! But I got a mid-range unit for $237. It's possible that they might go lower in coming months when the long awaited x50 arrives, but it's hard to imagine that they could go too much lower. Regardless, I'm not looking back. I'll pass my T|E on to my wife, who currently steals it for Scrabble every night anyway. She's been straggling by with an old M100, and I think that she may enjoy the T|E a bit more. I'll miss dear old Plucker, but I'll come into the world of µbook, and iSilo will still be there for me. I'll keep you up to date with the pains of transition...

I'm anxious to hear the plus/minus compared to Palm. I keep thinking about it, but it would take a lot of desperation for me because of all the ways I'm attached to Palm. Not the least of which is that I'm tied to ShadowPlan and DateBook5. But, hey, if OS6 and new Palm Models don't materialize you may have a flood of us following in your footsteps! Don't forget to fill us in on all the good and bad of your adventures! |

Hope the Axim works well for you. I must admit that I'm also tempted to switch over to PPC. From a developer standpoint, WinCE is easier to program for than Palm OS. On Palm OS you sometimes have to jump through hoops to get things done.

Yes, it is definitely tempting to make the switch. To be honest, I am not even sure if PalmOne is going to survive. The stock is doing bad, and I don't see a promising pipeline of new PDA devices. Ok, one day there is the Palm T5, but how many new PPCs have been released in the meantime?

Btw, ignatz, does that mean we see more PPC stuff here at mobileread.com in future? That would be great!

Igmatz, I think subconciously you're still looking back fondly at the Palm days, longing for them to continue... as evidenced by your profile which still says Palm Tungsten E!!!!

Ah, but he hasn't actually got it yet, so technically he's still a palm user...

Hey, I have very little bad to say about my Palm experience. I still love my T|E dearly. It does great work for what it is. In fact it wasn't but a few months ago that a friend offered to trade his Axim x5 for my T|E and I refused out of hand. But then I got the bug for wifi, which I'm not positive I will use, but I think just around the house it might be nice. And I spend so much time reading on it that I've got to have a bigger screen and a jog wheel. Now I have to tap the bottom of the screen or hit the down D pad and it's just not comfortable. I also justify this purchase with the hope that I can use it for some network analysis in my moonlighting computer repair job. If you combine a wifi PDA with one of these sweet things from ASUS (which you can get at NewEgg for $50) you can get on any network anywhere.
There are a couple of Palm options but they have their own negatives. The T|3 really doesn't appeal to me. I've never liked the slider and a wireless card for it is not cheap. There's also the Clie TH55, which I lusted after for a little while. But with the Clie line apparently dead, Sony's proprietary crap, and the price still around $350, it doesn't work either. And none of this would have mattered too much if I couldn't call it a birthday present. I've pretty much given over all my bday to this thing, and passed on upgrading my aging desktop. Hope I don't regret that! So I'm not really changing sides, I'm adding one. I'll reckon that my experience will be like Craig's, using the Palm less and less. My wife will have it mostly, and it will be a nice change from her old M100. I hope to document the experience more or less, as the transition should be pretty interesting in our geekish sort of way... |

I look forward to seeing your thoughts and experiences during the transition. That _was_ pretty close to what happened to me, too. When I first got the ipaq, I still used the clie occassionaly, but it has since fallen by the wayside. I keep it charged and synced, and keep it in my bag as a backup device.
The one time I needed it when I blew up my ipaq with a static discharge (lucky it was still on warranty) I was _lost_, even though I still had the palm. It made me realise I won't ever be going back to palm... I have too much time and software/money invested in Windows Mobile, and can do so much more. Would you like me to post what I have installed on my ppc? It's a _long_ list, but interesting. Craig. |

I'd love to see it. I'm already eyeballing software, though I'm going to try and take it slow. Indeed, I'll have to, as I don't have the wherewithall (read: $$$) to do it another way. Why don't you start another thread on "what do you have installed on your PPC?" Once I get mine, then I'll add in too... We should probably start one of those for the Palm too, while we're at it.

Cool. I just ordered a keyboard for my X30. Suppose to ship on Friday. Standard, not bluetooth. I've been spending too much money on unneeded accessories as it is that don't really help with work.
![]() Be sure and play some PocketQuake on it ![]() I have been and I don't even like FPS. Heheh. JJB |
