E-viewer window size and position not remembered
I'm using Calibre 1.8 on a Windows 7 64-bit PC.
Everything in regard to this thread's title was working fine previously, but after a disk crash and re-installation of Windows and Calibre, the e-viewer/reader window insists on opening to a narrow width (approximately 30% of the screen), and with its lower edge below the screen's lower border. What I really want is a wide width (approx 90% screen) view, centered vertically. I've gone to the Configure e-book viewer > Preferences > Configure e-book viewer > Miscellaneous options window and checked Remember last-used window size and position option, but it does not work. It reverts to the initial narrow view every time and with every book. Can anybody offer a cure for this? Thank you. ![]() Frank D |

The viewer remembers the settings (I have my buttons on the RIGHT side as it never made sense to me to have to cross over the text with the mouse). Believe me, I would notice ![]() |

Well, then, I guess there is no help or fix for the problem I'm having. Sad.

@frank14612 - shot in the dark
Download and install the portable version of calibre to see if it has same problem - if its doesn't then its almost certain that your problem is due to something in the 64 bit calibre installation; otherwise it must be... right now I can't imagine what else it could be. ![]() That solved the problem. The viewer window size and position that I set initially are retained for all books. Thank you, BetterRed! ![]() Frank D |

![]() How did you reinstall Windows and Calibre, i.e. what process did you use, fresh installs or an image recovery? I've known applications to malfunction after being reinstated from a recovery image. Not calibre, but it wasn't installed on the systems I have in mind, but other popular applications have malfunctioned on system A but not system B, i.e. no rhyme or reason - but not a large sample size. I would be thinking of wiping out the installed calibre and installing a totally fresh calibre including plugins and configuration options etc. BR |

Info: I reinstalled Windows 7 from the Windows Install DVD ("bare metal") and then copied over all my programs, including Calibre from the "Windows.old" folders. No recovery image was available in this case (since remedied). But now there's a new wrinkle on the original problem I posted about: each time (three times) I open Calibre Portable, it reverts to its initial post-install state: it does not remember how I tweaked it in terms of window size and position, and it forgets where my installed library is and the changes I've made to the toolbar. I've set these up twice now and it forgets each time. So it appears that the "cure" is now worse than the original "disease." Is there a fix for this? ![]() UPDATE: I just uninstalled Calibre 64-bit completely and then re-installed it. But now it has the same and a new problem: it won't remember its own window or viewer window size and position. So that rules out a faulty installation, carried over from a previous incarnation of Windows. Now I don't know what to do. It's acting like a spoiled child. In my own view and practice, it is always best to reinstall the applications themselves from their original media, not from windows.old. That especially so if one has reinstalled Windows during the process of trying to defeat some error. If that is followed then install the application with the problem first, validate if it is working correctly or not, and if it is add the other applications ensuring along the way that the previously troublesome application is not compromised again by them. I just did a number of things.
1. I uninstalled Calibre completely 2. I downloaded and installed the 64-bit version of 1.9. Same problems. 3. Uninstalled and installed 32-bit version of 1.9. Same problems. 4. Uninstalled and installed 32-bit version of 1.7. Same problems. What am I doing wrong? Frank |

The config data location can be ascertained by going to Preferences-Miscellaneous->Open config... (the last button) open it and leave it open whilst you close calibre. Now back out to the parent folder (Alt/UpArrow) and rename the folder you came from to something like calibre.old. Then uninstall all versions of calibre, make sure the caloibre folders in Program Files & Program Files (X86) are gone. Then install the latest 64 bit - this will be a fresh install with the welcome wizard. It will give you a fresh configuration - now tell calibre where you're library is - hopefully the window size problems will have gone - if not then ![]() You would have lost any customising and plugins - they are in calibre.old - but it might be better to start over rather than copying bits and pieces from there BR PS ![]() Last edited by BetterRed; 11-03-2013 at 07:32 PM.
