holding a "naked" Aura with a single hand: possible?

I am helping my husband decide between an Aura and a Kindle PW2 (well, I do know what I'd like him to buy). I know one of the most important things for him is for the device to be small, but he is used to a Pocketbook 360, which has buttons and a lot of space to rest your thumb. He hates the idea of a cover.

He saw a review comparing Aura and PW2 which specifically mentioned that it is hard to hold the Aura in one hand.

Does any of you Aura users have difficulties holding the device with one hand and without a cover? Any tips?

(I am thinking of adding a strap at the back or something similar, but if there is any solution that involves no modifications/craft work would be preferable).

I have no problems. Normally I just wrap my hand around it: three fingers on one side, thumb on the other, index on the back. I can even turn the page like this, even when wearing thin gloves (big ones would be too bulky for maneuverability).

I can also just hold it from the side without wrapping my hand around it no problems. If I do this position with a gloved hand it becomes dangerous as it feels quite slippery.

The kobo is smaller from what I gather and buttons aren't that big of a deal in my opinion. Not for an ereader.

Included is a gloved pic and a normal pic to five you an idea. Obviously it also depends on the size of his hands. With the second option you can also use your pinky top cradle the bottom of the aura. As kingjain says you can only really read with the positions. If you want to do more you'll have both hands to navigate the menus and such.

The aura takes a wide grip to be able to grasp firmly. This doesn't leave you with much reach for your thumb to navigate the touch screen unfortunately. However, you can still pretty easily read with one hand by adjusting the position of the device on your hand and using the swipe gesture to turn pages with your thumb. You can't do much else though with one hand, unless you have giant hands that is.

I've seen comments about the Aura HD being hard to hold in one hand but only one comment about the Aura being hard to hold in one hand. The Aura (and Glo) are the same width at 114mm while the Aura HD is 128.3mm and the Kindle PW2 is 117mm..

Given the PW2 is 3mm wider, 19mm taller and 1mm deeper than the Aura, anyone who can hold a PW2 in one hand is going to be to hold an Aura -- the 22 grams less weight for the Aura is going to help there too.

Oddly, the person who did the review in which they stated that holding the Kobo Aura one handed was not comfortable also stated the Kindle PW2 was lighter and narrower and capable of storing more books.

Regards,
David

Glue some velcro to the back of the Aura, and to his palm? That'll leave his thumb free to navigate...

I read one handed with the Glo all the time, but your mileage, like your hand size, may vary. Frankly, it is not the most comfortable method. I find myself holding it with two or three fingers behind the Glo, with it resting on my pinky(and/or ring finger) which leaves my thumb free to flip pages or assist the grip as needed by placing it on the bezel...

OTOH, what is so great about reading one handed?

It may sound silly to some, but a few properly shaped depressions on the back where one might grip with the fingertips by squeezing them together would be pretty handy for a one handed grip.

thank you all for your comments - on one handedness, it is habit, and at present he uses his Pocketbook 360 in landscape with the thumbs resting on the buttons - if the bezel of the Aura is thin, then the risk is that the thumb turns the pages even if that was not intended.
I should have thought that the Aura is the same width as the Glo, as I have found stores up here with the Glo (but not the aura), so he can check those out.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts.

@DNSB: I suspect we may be talking of two different reviews, the one I am referring to is in Italian

I did that for a Nook ST. Worked good. Well I used sticky velcro pads that attached to the device, and a piece of wide ribbon with the corresponding velcro pieces at each end. Then I could slide my fingers through the ribbon and hold it with one hand, and use my thumb on the screen.

Left no residue when removed.

The Glo and Aura are the same width (114mm) so the one handed experience should be much the same.

Since I don't read Italian and the review I read was in English, you are likely correct. My personal feeling was that the person who wrote the review I read was less than competent since the Aura's capacitive touch and eInk Regal technology was mentioned but the physical specifications seemed to be using the Aura HD's size and weight.

On the other hand, the same reviewer wrote a glowing* review of the new Nook GlowLight ereader -- think a Kobo Aura in white without the uSD card slot and less than 512MB for your personal books.

* pun intended

David

I find one handed use critical for anything I consider "mobile". Mobility is actually the reason I did not buy the Aura HD.

@Paola. If you check out hte Glo keep in mind that the bezel on the Glo is raised, meaning that there is a lesser chance for accidental page turns. If your husband has huge hands or pudgy fingers then it could easily be an issue but otherwise it should be easy to get accustomed to one handed use.

I don't think the aura/aura hd are hard to hold in on hand. The only issue I have and is with out the protection, more so for the Aura HD then for the Aura, there is the possibility of breaking the screen. I think though the design of the Aura limits this greatly from the over all design of all other kobo and other market readers. The one great improvement that Kobo came out with that should have been there from the start was the screen design of the Aura which obviously is superior protection then the original screen design of the previous kobo devices or competitors out there.

So if your going for the naked look, then the NEW 6" Aura is the way to go. Just make sure you get a screen protector for the device to prevent scratching of the display.

pinky cradle, look at all the new terms this thread has generated. At least its better then Twerking, which I think you could still do with the Aura in hand one handed.
