Calibre installation issues on Windows Vista
Hello,
I installed Calibre 1.6.0 onto a Toshiba Satellite L305 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium. Now when the machine tries to boot up I receive an error from the Visual C++ runtime library saying the application asked to be terminated abnormally, or something like that. Click OK, wait for awhile, the same error message pops up, over and over. I'm never able to boot the machine normally. So, boot in Safe Mode with Networking. Go to Control Panel, Programs, try to uninstall Calibre and get a message the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. Also, zero System Restore points to go back to. ![]() An hour on the phone with Microsoft Support and $99 later and I still have a computer that can only boot up in Safe Mode. Not acceptable. Any and all advice/help would be appreciated! Thanks! |

You would still need to Logon to Have it start and that would be IF YOU had added Calibre to the startup folder (not a standard Calibre install) |

Sorry to hear about your issues, but I think this is not a Calibre-related program. As far as I know, Calibre never starts any service when booting the computer. At least, it doesn't on mine.
Have you downloaded it from the Calibre website, or from somewhere else? If you try to normally boot the computer, can you get into the desktop at some point, or isn't even that possible? The only thing I could think of (if you don't have any restore points) is to press F8 during boot, and then choose "Last known good configuration". Then Windows will revert its registry to the point it was at when the system booted and shut down normally the last time. If even that doesn't help, I think a reinstallation is the only option remaining; it will be faster (and cheaper) than trying to have the system fixed. |
