New Kobo Glo - bugs normal?

So, just yesterday I came home with a shiny new Kobo Glo, my first ereader. I then spent the next 1-2 hours trying to get it to work. I plugged it into the wall to charge it first as my computer wasn't nearby, and after loading a screen with a choice of languages on it, it froze entirely. After unplugging and plugging it into my computer a few times, it unfroze and I updated it through the Kobo desktop program (for mac). Froze again. Messing around with it unfroze it, but after about 2-3 minutes of letting it sit idle, it was totally frozen once more.

I reset it using a paperclip and did a factory restore and updated it through the Kobo desktop program again, and since then it's behaved perfectly... I'm worried that it'll start its freezing game again though, should I be? I don't know what on earth its problem was. Is it possible I have a faulty model, or is this just firmware problems?

Teething issues aside, it's been lovely to use. I've noticed one 100% reproduce-able bug though, probably just a firmware thing. If I set the brightness of the light anywhere below 10%, then turn the light off and on again, the light won't turn back on - and when I look at the settings, it's gone back to 1%. It doesn't seem to happen above 10%. Have other people got this bug? I seem to have version 2.10.0. Any idea how often Kobo rolls out updates?

Thanks for your time!

(ETA: i didn't see any of these in either unconfirmed or confirmed in the stickied bug thread)

I've had my Kobo Glo for about 12 hours now. Although it seemed to take forever to update, with the screen doing a lot of worrisome flashing, it never once froze up on me. Mine is also on version 2.10.0 and I have the same light at less than 10% bug. I hadn't discovered it myself yet, but sure enough, any setting less than 10% causes the light to not turn back on while the setting says it's at 1%. I had to turn it up to get it to come on.

I also have a fair amount of ghosting despite it being set to refresh at every page turn, with the light on or off. Not sure if that's normal or not, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

If it's working fine after a factory reset, I'd just keep using it and see what happens. The 1% light bug is very well known, and will likely (IMO) be fixed in future firmware.

If you've never had an e-ink device before (and please forgive me if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here), you do need to often wait a little after input. If you are used to using, say, an iPhone, there is an adjustment period to the reaction time of an eink device. One waiting time that can feel particularly long is the wait for the device to realise that it's been ejected from the computer and that it needs to process the new books that have been put onto it, and give you feedback to that effect. In reality, this wait is only about 10-15 seconds, but it can feel much longer than that! Fiddling about with the device when it's in this sort of waiting period isn't helpful. I'm not saying that this is what you were doing - your device may well have just been a bit hinky out of the box and needed a full factory reset, and I think that was the right thing for you to do.

Lastly, you don't need the Desktop app at all, and back when I used it I found it nothing but trouble. I recommend using wifi for updates.
