Kobo - Beyond the Book event, August 27 in NYC

From TechnoBuffalo:

Quote:
Kobo just sent out invites for a press event that will take place in New York City on August 27. The company promises that it will take us “beyond the book” and will show us what’s next from the company. Kobo is a popular eBook reader that competes against Amazon and Barnes & Noble around the globe. It’s possible that we’ll see a new eReader from the company, though the “beyond the book” aspect suggests it could be something entirely different.

The company may introduce a new tablet, possibly an update to the Kobo Arc. The invite’s use of vibrant colors suggest that it has to do more with a tablet than a black and white eReader. Such a device would surely need to compete with whatever Amazon has coming down the pipeline.

TechnoBuffalo will be attending the event and reporting all of the news live. Stay tuned!
Yes Kobo. Surprise me in a good way!!!

Will definitely be interesting. Wonder if Amazon will have a press release on the same day?

A colour invitation is now an indication of a tablet release.

We have much better indicators that Kobo is releasing a 6" ereader that uses the firmware from their eInk models. Even that is just indicators, not proof, of what Kobo has in the works.

Maybe there's a tablet in there too, but I'm not going to place any weight on an invitations colourful motif as an indicator.

FWIW, in Canada there is a huge sale on the current ARC at Staples. The 16 Gig is marked final sale and is $129, 32 for $179, 64 for $199. This could mean something . This is a real steal for folks who want a tablet now that the 16 is the same price as a Kobo Glo.

Perhaps Kobo is working on a video game console? I mean, who isn't working on one these days?

Seeming as Kobo is pretty much an ebook and ereader company, I'm guessing that their game catalogue would be limited to Infocom titles.

Well, it sounds like a new tablet, not just an e-ink reader. The Nexus 7 (2013) is hitting the German shelves on the 30th, and I consider getting one, but perhaps Kobo has something awesome in store, too. The Nexus is pretty hard to beat, though, especially at that price point.

As for an e-ink reader, well, I'm quite happy with the Glo. Color e-ink from Kobo would surprise me, and would be hard to resist for me. A bigger than 6" monochrome reader wouldn't, and nobody seems to want to make a 5" or smaller one with frontlight.

By "beyond the book" perhaps they mean they're going to be selling music, movies, apps, etc? Personally, the idea of a new tablet from Kobo sounds rather unexciting.

I'm thinking new tablet with movie purchases and rentals. B & N just added the service to their tablets.
