Thumbs up Calibre Library Gone & Recovered > Steps

I made the mistake of installing something called Internet Download Manger. It took over my computer and I hated it. So I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller. That was a BIG MISTAKE. That's the first time I have ever had a problem using Revo Uninstaller. After I used it - I opened Calibre and my books were ALL GONE! Well, it had completely also wiped out my Roboform database but that wasn't as bad as losing all my books!

I tried using the restore feature from Revo, but since I had never looked at that before, the restore went to my Recycle Bin and was not stored on my Computer! Oy! I used it anyway in hopes that something would work but it didn't. I tried Windows Restore. Nope.

Finally - I downloaded a program called 7-Data Recovery Suite (since I was Nsane & Down and Lo & Behold it WORKED! It found a folder called Lost Files and in it were all my books! I just had to go in there and check the books one by one and not all the other files it found. I then saved them to a USB drive and then dropped them into my Calibre Folder and updated it.

I did get some errors since my Kindle key has changed! But that's better than all the books I thought I had lost.

7-Data Recovery Suite was extremely easy to use.

@allowingtoo - that's good to know .

Which version of Revo - Free or Pro, and how deep did you ask it to look. This is not the first hint that Revo and Calibre don't always get along.

I had problems with Free when I first installed Win 7, not with calibre, something else, I forget what. Before buying Pro I decided to see if I could live without Revo. I've decided I can.

My conclusion is that either MS smartened up its side of install/uninstall processes or that software suppliers smartened up their side of it - probably a bit of both. Consequently I'm of the opinion that the need for things like Revo in Win7/8 is diminished - XP was a different story.

I don't understand this. Sounds very strange. Shouldn't work at all, as far as I know. Can you elaborate and describe what you actually did?

Revo Pro. I emailed the developer. I've NEVER had a problem like this and I've used their program a lot.

Adoby - I saved all the books to the USB drive and it was in a folder called Lost or something. I renamed it Calibre. I opened the Calibre folder in my Document folder where they are stored and cut and pasted them in. Then in Calibre there is on your toolbar Calibre Library. To the right, you click on the Down arrow and it brings you to Library Maintenance. From there you can choose to Restore Database. It overwrites all the books that are in the folder (the ones that I just dropped in there) and updates the Database or what you see when you open Calibre.

It wasn't perfect as I said. All the books are dated today. I saved the log because some books were (maybe) not added since I have deleted a Kindle. Still, that's better than losing 945 books total. I can always download those again since the log told me which ones had the error.

It's the same steps you take if you decide to Format your computer or if you move your Library from one computer to another.

Hope this helps.

@allowingtoo - thanks, its the use of Free to uninstall 64bit packages of which I'm suspicious I thought it wasn't possible, but some folks seemed to have coerced it into doing so - or maybe Revo updated Free since I last looked at it.

I would have added the books to the library instead of having library maintenance discover them. I didn't know that library maintenance was powerful enough to be used to add a random folder filled with books. Interesting.

The Restore Database feature of the library maintenance menu is not powerful enough to be used to add a random folder filled with books. The Restore Database feature uses the metadata.opf files in each book's folder to reconstruct the metadata.db file that is the heart of the library.

So I heard back from Revo.

Since I had used IDM to download a couple of books - guess what happened?

Like I said - it took OVER my computer. Never again.

I'm sure there are a lot of people that use it and love it - but be sure to back up your Calibre Library someplace safe!
