Quick conversion from Kindle PW 1 to 2

I own a Kindle Touch and a PW 1. Both are pretty full. The PW has about 190 Mb left. I am thinking about getting a PW 2. In past experiences it has been a simple but painful (time-consuming) effort to convert from one Kindle to a new one.

If I copy everything by tethering to my Mac, it will copy them but the books will not be "authorized" to open on the new device, so I had to go to Manage My Kindle and resend all my books one at a time through their dropdowns. THEN I had to remove the old device and establish the new one with since there is a limit to how many devices can access my books (and I also use my iPhone and iPad, so I couldn't keep those and both Kindles).

After that I had to change the email address associated with the new Kindle.

Finally I had to manually create my collections and move each book to them.

I am considering going to a PW 2. Am I missing something that others know about that will automate this process or which will greatly reduce the time involved?

Thanks in advance!

Have you considered using Calibre to manage your book library? A little work to get it set up and your books added to it, but then you are free of Amazon's 'clunkiness' and restrictions with regard to library management. Highly recommend.

That will be true for any books that have DRM. The copy is authorized for the specific device.

This shouldn't be the case. Most books can be on at least 5 or 6 devices at the same time, but an account can have as many devices registered to it as you want (Kindle's and apps combined I think I have 10 or 12 right now).

This is of course true if you want to use the same address you were using with the old device.

I think the main thing for a lot of users here is that many of them remove DRM and therefore can just copy their books to a new device without going through Manage Your Kindle to get a copy encrypted for the device.

You can simply tap "Cloud" on the main menu of the new device and download all from Amazon. You can even import your collections from the Cloud. All eBooks will automatically attach to the same collections as they were in on the other device.

I am not sure if all this can be done between Kindle for iPad and the regular Kindles.

Thanks!

Thanks, everyone!

I will try the Cloud solution first (and keep my fingers crossed). This will be the first time I bought a fresh Kindle from a store. When I ordered from Amazon, the email address and everything else about my account was preloaded when I took it out of the box.

Hoping that this will go smoothly. Granted I will still have the PW 1 functionally but I would love to have the new device with a minimum of pain and then perhaps give the PW1 to my wife after resetting it.....

We shall see......

Tap each one.

You tap each one in sequence. Each takes about 20 seconds.

When you tap the Cloud, you will see an option to import your Collections with a choice of prior devices from which to take them.

Don't forget to charge overnight while all of them are indexing.

Install Kindle For Mac.
Download all your books using Kindle For Mac.
Install Calibre.
Google Apprentice Alf and read up on his DeDRM plugins for Calibre.
Import all books from the Kindle For Mac download folder into Calibre.

Now you can put them onto any device you want, including your new Kindle.

If this does not work on a Mac, follow the same steps on a PC (using Kindle for PC), and in the end, use "Save to Disk" from Calibre. The program will save un-DRM-ed versions of your books, and you can import them into Calibre on the Mac and do whatever you want with them.

Yes, even convert them in Calibre and put them onto a Kobo or Sony.

It's "YourMediaLibrary" page. Why this page is not advertised, is a mystery to me.
So how exactly can you use the Media Library to transfer stuff? I've known about the page for years, but there's no way I know of to use it to do a bulk transfer. Also, just FYI, any "deletions" done are moved to the trash of the Media Library, but aren't actually deleted.

Oh crap. I feel like an idiot. My apologies; I've only used it once (to delete foreign dictionaries) and I could've sworn I saw a "deliver" option there, as well. Sorry about that
