Romance, Erotica

Wouldn't it be great if Kobo offered an option to exclude all Romance and Erotica books from their e-mails and recommendations?

The majority of the books that accompany the "percentage off" codes are all the Romance and Erotica books that I'm not interested in. If I could exclude them, then I wouldn't have to troll through page after page of this genre to find books that I might actually want to buy. I'm sure some people like this type of writing, it just isn't me. Each to their own.

They continue to claim that they are trying to establish the type of books I'm interested in, one book at a time. Great - let me tell you what I don't like.

I don't get anything like this in my emails from Kobo so not sure why you would.

I'd say it would be nice to tell Kobo what I don't like - although my genre list would be different from yours - to get better recommendations.

Does anyone actually get useful recommendations from Kobo?

I do. But on the site and the app. Very little erotica/romance recommended. A few other books from series I'm reading, genre related books which seem interesting. But the e-mails? No, nothing good normally. I have the option activated more for the codes :P

I do as well. Most of what is recommended are books I would read. Unfortunately, a lot are for books I already have in paper or other sources. The accuracy of the recommendations went up dramatically after I bought a few books Kobo.

The nuisance at the moment is that when you buy a book in a series, the rest of the series is added to the recommendations. Adding the next makes sense, but not all ten books.

About 90% of the recommendations I get from Kobo are pretty good, but there is quite a lot of redundancy. For example I buy the UK edition of a book and Kobo will then recommend the US edition or the German translation of the same book.

Edit: I should say that when I first got my Kobo the recommendations were awful, almost entirely romance/erotica, but they improved dramatically as I bought books from Kobo (I buy 95% SF/Fantasy).

It goes in cycles. I get a few weeks of getting mainly science fiction/fantasy recommendations then I get a few weeks of romance as the majority of the recommendations.

However, I never seem to get any erotica as a recommendation. Though looking at some of my wife's reading material, some romance authors would have been writing for the plain brown wrapper market not all that many years ago.

Regards,
David

I wasn't paying attention and was being a little greedy, and bought the German version of "Redshirts". I then had a flood of German translations of various SciFi books.

And the "little greedy" was because I searched for the book, found two versions, clicked the promo available option and one stayed. I bought that with a 50% off code. I discovered my error when I opened the book. When I looked back at the page for the book, it was obvious it was German and completely my fault. But, Kobo refunded the money with no questions asked. Of

Interesting, I just did the search again and there are no non-English books. But, if I select one of his books, and the click on the author, they appear.

The recommendations I get are pretty good. But there seems to be a couple of books that are stuck in the recommendation list on my Glo. I've tapped on the "I've read it" button and given them a star rating, but after each sync these books are still in the recommendations list.

For me not really. The recommendations are either (a) ebooks I have bought from them, (b) an ebook I bought in a series and recommended earlier novels in the series, (c) ebooks I have looked at or previewed, (d) plethora of Australian novels, or (e) Romance/Erotica novels with discounts.
