Giller Long List Books

Anyone inclined to read their way through the Scotiabank Giller Long List?
  • Dennis Bock for his novel Going Home Again (HarperCollins Canada)
  • Joseph Boyden for his novel The Orenda (Hamish Hamilton Canada)
  • Lynn Coady for her short-story collection Hellgoing (House of Anansi Press)
  • Craig Davidson for his novel Cataract City (Doubleday Canada)
  • Elisabeth De Mariaffi for her short story collection Howto Get Along with Women (Invisible Publishing)
  • David Gilmour for his novel Extraordinary (Patrick Crean Editions)
  • Wayne Grady for his novel Emancipation Day (Doubleday Canada)
  • Louis Hamelin for his novel October 1970, translated by Wayne Grady (House of Anansi Press)
  • Wayne Johnston for his novel The Son of a Certain Woman (Knopf Canada)
  • Claire Messud for her novel The Woman Upstairs (Knopf Canada)
  • Lisa Moore for her novel Caught (Anansi)
  • Dan Vyleta for his novel The Crooked Maid (HarperCollins Canada)
  • Michael Winter for his novel Minister Without Portfolio (Hamish Hamilton Canada).

They are all available on the Kobo Canada website. Only one of them on the Kobo US one. The days of universally available books still seems far, far away.

Can't say I've ever heard of the "Giller Long List", nor indeed most of the authors listed.

I've always enjoyed the books I've read from the Giller long list. The ones I've been able to to get my hands on in the US, anyway. There's a few available as Kindle editions
Thanks for posting.

"Only in Canada, eh? Pity" -- Lipton's Tea ad tagline

The full name is Scotiabank Giller Prize. Here is a link: http://www.scotiabank.com/gillerprize/0,,5813,00.html It was set up about 20 years ago by a private individual and then sponsorship was taken over by the Bank of Nova Scotia. It is arguably Canada's preeminent literary prize.

Thanks for the info. Duly bookmarked for annual consultation. Doubt I'll read any of this year's entries though.

Well, chances are you will have trouble finding most of these books outside of Canada right now. The shortlisted books will have wider release. And the UK gets more Canadian authors than does the US. I've read four of the books on the list so far. I generally read all of the shortlist, when it is announced.

Not Lipton's, Red Rose.

Red Rose is now part of the Lipton division of Unilever. Red Rose tea in Canada is a different blend then that sold in the US.

I see both Bock's Going Home Again and Messud's The Woman Upstairs on the US Kobo site. I'm looking forward to reading the latter but am 31st in the queue at my public library, so it could be a while. :-)

Have you read Going Home Again? Do you recommend it?

OK, mea culpa - it's been a long time since I paid attention to tea bag ads - and now the "What's in your cup" peeps have me drinking various loose teas. I was amazed at the difference. Now I wander over to David's Teas and buy 50 or 100 gram pouches.

Do they still put little ceramic frogs and lambs and such into the boxes?

I remember when I was very young in the sixties that Red Rose included little cards with pictures of various space-themed objects. It was during the time of the moon landings. I would beg my parents to drink more tea so that we could get another box with maybe a new card in it. By today's standards, that was rather hip for a tea company.

I very much liked Claire Messud's book, not so much the last third or so, where I got temporarily lost in some odd way (though I became unlost at the end and liked it again). Going Home is one I may skip unless some of my trusted friends who have bought it say something that counters what I read in the National Post review: http://arts.nationalpost.com/2013/08...y-dennis-bock/.

So many books, so little time.
