Nexus 4 Prices Slashed to $199 & $249

Google just slashed the prices of the Nexus 4 by $100. The 8GB model is now $199 and the 16GB model is now $249. This phone is unlocked and pure Android. Its specs blow a similarly priced iPod touch 5 out of the water. At this price point, it'll make a great on-the-go media player (audiobooks, ebooks, music, videos, etc) for those of us who don't use smartphones.

Key Specs
  • CPU -- Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro
  • Speed -- 1.5 GHz quad-core
  • RAM -- 2.0 GB
  • GPU -- Adreno 320
  • Display -- 4.7" IPS / GG2 / 1280x768 (320 ppi)
  • OS -- Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • Camera -- rear= 8MP AF w Flash / front= 1.3MP
  • Features -- Bluetooth 4 / GPS / Compass / NFC / dual band WiFi
  • Storage -- 8GB ($199) / 16GB ($249)
  • mSD -- no
  • USB -- micro USB 2.0 / OTG requires root
  • Battery -- 2100 mAh / Qi charging
  • Size -- 5.3" x 2.7" x 0.36" / 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm
  • Wt -- 4.9 oz / 139 g

Hmm, not so sure. I love my Nexus 4 but the one thing that I'm not so sold on is its sound quality through headphones or output to a stereo. The audio sounds 'thinner' to me. It's OK, but the sound was much richer on my Galaxy S, and neither could beat my old Creative Zen Micro.

'Thinner' is fine by me. It's the overall package I'm looking for -- Android 4.3, GPS, compass, 2GB RAM, fast CPU, 320ppi GG display, Google Play Store, cams for barcodes and chat, availability of rugged cases, etc -- and all at a very good price point. Can't get these features on any media player that currently exists. So, I'm more than willing to take some compromises in sound and photo quality.

No LTE kills it for me. I was seriously looking at it when I did my last upgrade and AT&T's HSPA+ is not bad in my area, but LTE is much better. I went with the Motorola Atrix HD as it was cheaper and had the faster LTE. Seriously eyeing the Moto X as a potential upgrade next year... Not quite the Google experience of the Nexus 4, but close. Thanks for heads up, though.

No sweat

I'm the opposite. I didn't buy it for use as a phone and won't activate it. It's strictly going to be used as a media player to replace my aging iPod touch 4 and Galaxy Player 4. Compared to an iPod touch 5, it's a killer deal.

Tempted, but the lack of TFlash (aka uSD aka microSD) might be my deal killer.

I wonder how, since I know nothing f Android phones, it compares in spec to the Samsung Galaxy S2 my brother gifted me with when he upgraded to the 3. Anyone know? Camera specs - the only thing I know about - seem to be the same.

For starters, the S2 is 1.5 years older than the Nexus 4. That translates into older technology. Overall, the Nexus 4 has much better specs.

Compare the differences --> Galaxy S2 -- Nexus 4

I saw this last night. This is a killer deal, you get an unlocked, off-contract phone for a similar price you'd pay for a 2-year contract phone like the S4, HTC One or iphone. If LTE is not a must, it's really a no-brainer.

I've been waiting for the price to drop on this. If the initial offerings would've been 16GB & 32GB (instead of 8GB & 16GB), I would've jumped on it long ago.

Now I'll have a real media player

buh, bye Apple ...buh, bye Samsung ...farewell forever

Yeah, having owned several Android devices, the Google experience factor of always having the latest version of the OS is a huge factor and despite not having LTE and uSD card slot, it was a contender when I was looking. As afv011 pointed out, it's comparable in price to a subsidized Galaxy S4 where you're locked into a 2 year contract.

8GB version out of stock in US Google Play Store

Quote:
After Google gave its Nexus 4 a $100 price cut last week, the 8GB version of the phone is now sold out on the Play store. It appears that the price reduction was more of a clearance sale, however, as Google tells The Verge that the cheaper model will not be restocked.

The 16GB variant is still available for $249, and the 8GB version may remain on the Play store in other countries while stocks last, but it looks like those in the US have missed their chance to pick up a sub-$200 smartphone from Google. The Nexus 4 was originally announced last October and lacks LTE connectivity, so a future update could well be in the cards.

Sockmonkey, I have both the Nexus 4 and the latest iPod Touch, and if you only need a media player, I would recommend the iPod Touch over the Nexus 4, because the Nexus 4 battery is attrocious, and the device is much bulkier and heavier than the iPod Touch.

The next gen iPod T is right around the corner, if Apple releases an upgrade this fall, so the price on the current one may drop or an even better one may go on sale soon.

Obviously, if you'd be popping in a SIM card and using the Nexus 4 as a phone, the above statements are irrelevant.
