Repeated Setup Crashes with 2.8.1 using Kobo Desktop

Good Evening chaps,

My device can happily wirelessly setup, log in and work. However it appears in Win7 as an unformatted/unrecognised removable disk, unrecognised by calibre or kobo desktop.

Whenever I attempt to setup my Kobo through Kobo Desktop, the program either crashes, hangs, or fails to recognise the device. However, it also, incredibly frustratingly, seems to take the brilliant step of managing to make the drive suddenly appear 'unformatted/inaccessible' from My Computer.

I have redownloaded Kobo Desktop twice and attempted it on an older XP machine to the same result; the only way to access the device's disk is in the virgin 'plug the device in' state achieved post-factory reset.

Help?

I take it you have already tried to do a factory reset either from the menu or hardware?

Tried a different USB cable?

When you use a USB connection to your computer after a factory reset, do you see the Kobo ereader mounted as a drive before you run the Kobo Desktop App?

If your device is set up over a wireless connection, you should be in the same state as the Kobo Desktop application would achieve (user setup, syncing books from the Kobo site, etc.). You would still need to connect to your computer to use ADE to setup Adobe's DRM for borrowing library books and so on but the Kobo application is not really needed.

Regards,
David

David,

Thank you for your reply.

Curiously, the device shows up in device manager as 'Kobo Reader 2.8.1 USB Device' and checking these properties it also detects the full space of the Kobo as unformatted - however any attempt to use Windows to format it fails (no surprise there).

I have tried a separate cable to the same result - The device is in perfect working order until I attempt in any way to access it from my computer; before the update it worked flawlessly with Calibre (or manually dumping books/pdfs for that matter) -I have never used the Kobo Desktop Application except for setup.

Weird and wonderful toys, these ereaders.

Immediately after the factory update, when you connect it to your computer, do you see any directories/files on the device when you initially connect it? That is, the .adobe-digital-editions and .kobo directories should be visible.

Given that it is behaving the same on multiple computers with multiple USB cables, it's a tossup whether the USB connector has become damaged or the internal uSD card is damaged.

If your device is under warranty, I'd suggest contacting Kobo customer service.

If it's not under warranty, depending on the model of your device, it can be fairly easy to open and remove the internal uSD card for testing. Some of the early Touch models did not have internal uSD cards and the Aura HD can be a pain to dismantle but most of the Touches and Glo are quite easy to open -- see the thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...47&postcount=1 in the Developer's Corner thread for more information.

Regards,
David

Does Calibre see your device?

Seems to be something to do with the firmware upgrade delivered by 2.8.1

I've contacted Kobo customer support about getting the device replaced.
