32 bit and 64 bit

I know I can install these both at the same time ... but is there any way to run them simultaneously?

I know this sounds daft, but I want to have two libraries open simultaneously and I had hoped to use the two versions to get around the check which prevents two versions running simultaneously.

Oh, yes, I'm using win 7.

Thanks for the amazingly prompt reply.

And, of course, for an amazing piece of software.

It is possible to "fake" it.

You can run several instances of calibre simultaneously on the same computer if you use VMs, Virtual Machines, using for instance VirtualBox. Then you can install and run calibre in each VM. As far as calibre is concerned it is the same as running calibre on dfifferent computers. But for you as a user it is almost like you are able to run calibre and have more than one library open at the same time. Almost, because you wont be able to drag and drop between the libraries. But you can have more than one library on screen at the same time.

https://www.virtualbox.org/

Plenty of RAM and several processor cores helps. Otherwise it may feel too slow.

You may have troubles running calibre in a VM and sending books to your ereader.
My brother was able to run calibre in a VM but was unable to send books to his Kobo from the the virtual machine. They (the ebooks) were constantly corrupted on the ereader. He finally ended up running ended calibre on the local machine to send books to the Kobo.
Probably something to do with the USB pass-through.

it would be very very useful to be able to have two instances of calibre (or the 64 and 32 bit versions) open at the same time when adding books. So often a duplicate is shown BUT there is no way to know the quality of the book.

It would be very useful if the finding of a duplicate, while listing name, author and filename would also include a custom column such as quality so you would have a better idea of whether to add the books or not.

It is too bad it is not possible to open a second instance in a read only mode for when adding books.

Rather than count on built-in USB pass through, I suggest one of the USB over network solutions. There are several, but lately I've been using USB Redirector from Incentives Pro.

I agree it would be handy. I have a virtual machine, but for adding books it is more trouble for me, than just adding the books with a create duplicate record. Then I use the duplicate plugin or ALT-A to get them straightened out. Easier for me than switching back and forth.
