Need to reboot Paperwhite?
If you have used a Windoze computer for any length of time, you know you need to reboot once in a while because of the memory leaks and other problems. Otherwise, all kinds of strange, unpredictable things can happen.
I almost never reboot my Kindles, to the point where I was surprised when people said they were having trouble with their Paperwhite losing time. I had never noticed it happening, because I never reboot. Is it helpful to reboot a Kindle the same way you need to reboot a Windoze computer? Sometimes I feel that it's running slower than others, and lately I've had two books that were indexing for what seemed to be a long time. (of course, I just checked to see which two and there is only ONE now.) ![]() |

I reboot whenever the device is acting weird like my Paperwhite's light won't turn off despite being put to sleep. Otherwise, I don't reboot.

I don't bother. It reboots itself whenever the software gets updated, that seems to be enough for mine.

Sometimes my paperwhite still has the light on when I press the power button and it shows the screensaver, but the light turns itself off after a minute or two, it doesn't stay on all the time. I thought Amazon was trying extra-hard to get me to look at the offers!
I did have a problem recently where my Kindle was not keeping the last page read when I switched books. I had to reboot for that. eP |

I've had the light stay off after a nap, but I've never had the problem where it stays on. Which problem is more common?

I've had it once every two weeks or so. I use the official cover with sleep/wake functionality, and at times the light doesn't turn on, which adjusting light levels fixes, or gets stuck "on" and won't turn off even with the power button. Only a restart fixes that.
It's been pretty consistent since I got mine six weeks ago. I've yet to get past two weeks without a restart as a result. |

I've had the light bug a few times, and have experienced it both staying on and staying off. However, it's not happened to me at all for about 2 months now. Perhaps a recent firmware update fixed it?

Up until yesterday I blamed the light bug on cases with auto-wake. Then yesterday my PW's light didn't turn off after a pushed the button, the wallpaper changed but the light stayed on. All this with a 'naked' PW, no case. And it has the latest firmware. It's been a few weeks since the last light bug occasion, then again yesterday. Also, I get both bugs, meaning light stays on when it shouldn't, and the one where the light doesn't turn on after unlock. Still, it doesn't bother me much, I wouldn't give up my PW just because of this.
Anyway, I think this is still something that they have to resolve at Amazon. Last edited by kledor; 09-01-2013 at 11:05 AM. |

I never reboot the Paperwhite, unless the front light gets stuck in the on or off position, which sometimes happens, for whatever reason.
This bug only happens once every so often (I haven't seen it for weeks), and as the above poster says, I wouldn't give up the KPW for it. I just consider it one of the (small) annoyances of digital reading; and this one is MUCH less annoying than having to hold a paperback with two hands, because it tries to slam shut as soon as you hold it with one hand. |

I wish. I'm on the latest, and the PW 3G isn't showing a 5.3.7 update, as that's Touch only. I've yet to go past two weeks without the light bug. Still doing better than the Glo or Aura HD in that respect, even if the latter need fewer restarts.

I wonder if it makes any difference how you turn the Kindle on and off? I always use the auto turn on/off provided by the official Amazon cover and, as I say, it's at least a couple of months since I've experienced the light bug.

As noted earlier, I'm using the official cover with the auto sleep-wake function. But I do have to put down the Kindle somewhat frequently, so it get turned on/off by the cover several times a day.

I get the light bug every now and again. I usually just reboot it the next time I go to use it, have assumed it's been caused by the light controller hanging, or a shortage of ram because the thing's been running for weeks at a time. Rebooting never takes long, so I've never bothered looking for a 'fix'.
