crisper font on the Touch than the Paperwhite?
So, I just got my Paperwhite as I wanted an e-ink reader with a backlit display. I'm totally happy with the light, but I find that the font is crisper on my Kindle Touch than on my Paperwhite, even at similar font sizes and with the light off on the PW. Is this normal?

Yes it is, the font is rendered thicker/bolder on the PW, K3 and K4 as compared to the KT. That makes the KT font rendering appear sharper. I remember when the K3 looked like that, and then a firmware update turned the font to sludge. All in the name of perceived contrast.

Yes, I was disappointed too at first.
Well, I am still disappointed. Still like my PW better than the KT. But, under some conditions, the KT screen looks better. |

It would be nice if we could adjust the apparent font weight or 'contrast' (shift some of the grey pixels to darker grey). |

After the release, there were some posts about it, but they were drowned in the sea of complaints about uneven lighting and rainbow-colored screens. Yet, I fully expected Amazon to patch the fonts at some point down the road. By now, I lost hope... |

I wonder if they'll fix it for PWII? Perhaps it was bad timing of me to get the PW now. But I'm getting more used to the screen now and quite like it. Font issue still bugs me, though, but I like how the contrast between text and screen is stronger. |

Nope. I have both, and I prefer the appearance of the fonts on the PW.

I've actually made a fatter version of one of my favorite fonts as it was too thin on the PW. I like fatter fonts as they're easier to read for me, because of my eyesight problems.

I'm getting used to it now. I have another question, though: is there a shortcut for turning wifi on and off? On the KT there was an option in the scroll down menu in the top right hand corner, but seems now on the PW I have to tap my way into the settings page?

Is your firmware updated? I don't recall the details, but I know they have, at some point, made it easier to access.
You should be able to access settings from the menu even when in-book now - so you are only two clicks away from airplane mode. If I remember correctly, you used to have to go back to home to do it... |

Some things are better on one reader than another. The grass is always greener in some way.
When I bought my mother a kindle I used it for a week while I was setting it up as she was 85 and on the opposite coast and I wanted to be able to help her by phone. I had a Sony 600 which had a far inferior display and shorter battery life. I much preferred the touch interface and the collection managing capabilities and the page numbers on the Sony though. Within a week of sending my mother her kindle I was once again content with my Sony. The 650 came out with a kindle 3 quality display, and battery, but by then I was happy enough with my 600 that I decided not to spend the $299. I did not buy a T1 either, but I received one as a Christmas gift from my roommates. No complaints except I think the 650 was nicer. Then I went on an ereader buying binge when the prices dropped. Go figure. First a 350 because of the size and quality and then a Kobo mini because of the size and price, and the lovely packaging. Then an Aura because I hadn't bought anything in the gadget line for a few months. I gave the 600 away and sold the 350 to a friend who desperately wanted it. But the moral of this line of gibberish is that I would still be reading away happily on my 600 if gifts and prices and shiny appearances etc. hadn't seduced me away. They are all great and none is perfect although my Sony 600 was pretty close in my mind. Helen |
