Problems with Paperwhite

My paperwhite is less than a month old and I am having some issues. First I have had a touch for a year, so am experenced in using a kindle. I finished a book and touched home, the kindle sort of froze. I had to hit home a few times for it to then sluggishly respond. When it finally went home All my books just vanished on it, so I did a reset, then reloaded my books. I load it using calibre. I did not notice at the time that less than half the books actually loaded. So I went back to load the rest tonight, calibre showed all the books there on the kindle still. I thought this very odd and reloaded the books again. They show loaded in calibre but again not on my kindle. By this stage I think I am going nuts and think try a few things on the kindle. So I delete the 3 books I have read on the kindle. All the right actions happen and I del them BUT they are still there. I turn off then back on my kindle and the books still show. So I click on one and it says content unavailable.
I also notice my battery is only at half after 1 week, yes I turn wifi off and the light is at a low setting always.
Oh I should say those little darker shadows have now shown up at the bottom of the screen.
What on earth is going on with my paperwhite.

Sounds like your PW may be trying to index a corrupt file....on the home page, try searching on a non-sense word like"plrmt" and see if it says there are still books being indexed. If there are, tap on that indicator to see which books haven't completed indexing and delete them. Then reconvert them in Calibre before sending them back to your PW. Good Luck!

Okay just did that, and it searches fine. Thanks for the idea tho

I am reluctant to reset it again, as having tried this already with what seemed a perfect working kindle after the reset, to have it fail again in less than a week.

When you say 'searches fine' do you mean that there were no books still being indexed? The symptoms of running slow, chewing through battery life and books not showing up on the PW even though seen by Calibre really smells of a corrupted book file.....
You might try removing all books via Calibre and see how it runs then.

You did a restart, or a Factory Reset? A Factory Reset should take care of any corrupted files. I'd do that, then just load a couple of books and see if the problem is resolved before loading a whole bunch.

Okay done a factory reset yet again, then reloaded my books, again only 20 books to test it. It acted weird in calibre again as I did it, it showed no books on the device again, yet all books were ticked as on main in calibre/ When I unplugged the kindle then back in all books showed on device, and actually showed up on the kindle.
This is all so weird, as I have said I have used a kindle touch for a year, again loading with calibre, not a problem/ I am getting a little concerned I may have a lemon, especially how fast it uses battery.

Read this page of the thread from the Calibre Devices subforum (starting at the top)....it sounds exactly like what you are describing.

Oh my goodness, thank you. I had assumed it was a kindle only problem, not a calibre mobi issue.
I had all my books in calibre,sorted jow I like, so loaded from there not amazon.

I will read the thread more to try and work out if amazon will release a fix.

It sounds like you may have a bad / corrupt book file....try removing them, reconverting in Calibre (mobi to mobi) to fix them and then reload in small batches. I don't think Amazon is likely to 'fix' their software...

Mine did this when I went on wi-fi and downloaded a prime lending book. It froze up, gave me some error message and all my books were gone, it went to zero.

I restarted it twice before it finally fixed itself. Then I tried to delete sample books and it never deleted them. Then I tried to open the sample book and it said it was deleted! So again I restarted and the sample books finally are gone!

Of course my time went bonkers. I had to reset that. What the heck happen? I will never download sample books again.

It has nothing to do with sample books. Sample books are just files like any other book file - no difference at all.

Then what caused my Paperwhite freakout? All I did was download a book from lending library and 4-5 sample books.

Hope the Paperwhite isn't going downhill. Haven't had any problems at all just reading.

A corrupt ebook file. Probably had a hiccup during download, and the entire file didn't make it onto the Kindle.
