Kindle Paperwhite 2
I know there is another thread on a very similar topic however, I would like to change the format of the discussion around a little in this thread as a poll. For all of us kindle paper white 1 owners what percentage of us intend to order or have ordered the new version. I know in my own opinion I have seen the memo on amazons's home page and I have considered the value that they have packed into the new model versus the price and I think we all need to figure out a subjective question: How much value does amazon need to provide to warrant the price tag that they have attached to the paper white 2?
For just me they need to provide more value than what they have provided to warrant that price tag, the additional menu functionality + the increase in screen resolution + 25% increase in processor speed is not enough. For that price I am going to need something over 50% increase in processor speed and/or more menu functionality then what they have provided. What percentage of us intend to order the new model? I'll keep upgrading until I have the perfect screen.
Edited to say I am in full time employment so for me the cost right now isn't a big issue, but it did help that my existing case will fit as I plan to sell my existing Paperwhite with a spare case I have. |

You might want to ask the mods to change your title to include "Paperwhite". When I saw Kindle 2, I thought someone revived a very old thread.

That was my thought, as well. You mean the Paperwhite 2.

No...although I don't object to the price. From the videos I've watched, the lighting doesn't look better than last year's model. And it has the same clunky UI. New screen tech is intriguing. But I like the Kobo software and UI SO much better (not to mention the 4gb on the new one) that I am likely going to order the new Aura, when pink becomes available.

I have no quarrel with the price, but as a very happy PW1 owner (I have a perfect screen), the PW2 is not a sufficient upgrade to tempt me. I am going to wait and see what PW3 will bring to the market.

I only bought my PW in the beginning of the summer and I'm happy with it, so no reason for me to upgrade. I knew when I bought it that there would probably be new models in the fall and I wanted one for the summer. I also knew about the blobby screens and I was worried about that. I don't see any blobs on my screen. If I did, I would be pre-ordering the new one right now.
I am not one to upgrade my gadgets every year, anyway. I think as an incremental upgrade, the new PW looks just fine and price looks just fine (same as the old price). I don't expect radical improvements every year, I'm just happy that e-ink screens keep improving at all. It's a much smaller market than tablets, after all. Let's hope we get most or all of the new firmware features in a firmware update. I am guessing that we will. eP |

If I had a first gen PW, I wouldn't upgrade. In my opinion, there isn't enough of a jump to justify the expense.
You can modify the thread title by clicking the "edit" button on your original post then click on "Go Advanced" and put the new title in the appropriate box. |

Let's see!
What's new with Paperwhite 2: 1. Whiter Screen, Darker Text Not good enough. Make the screen as white as a real paper without the light. 2. 25% Faster Page Turns Not good enough. Make it 100%. 3. Preview other pages in the book without leaving your current page A nice feature. 4. All at once access to dictionary, X-Ray and Wikipedia I rarely use X-Ray and Wikipedia with a Kindle. 5. Vocabulary Builder Sounds great but it remains to be seen how useful it is. 6. Read an End Note without leaving your current page A nice feature. 7. Integration with Goodreads I never use Goodreads and don't like using social media sites. 8. Kindle FreeTime for kids I don't have kids. 9. Kindle MatchBook Don't apply to me since I don't buy printed books anymore unless it's a bigger book with lots of pictures and diagrams and hence unsuitable for an e-reader. Verdict: I wouldn't upgrade and I would just wait until Amazon incorporates new features from PaperWhite 2 to PaperWhite 1 with a firmware upgrade. Amazon incorporated new features from PaperWhite 1 to Kindle Touch with a firmware upgrade so they may do the same thing with PaperWhite 1. |

I preorded one. If the screen is really as good as in some pictures I have seen, it will be worth the upgrade to me, as I read every day. It's a small price to pay for a hobby, in my situation (employed, no kids). If the pictures were photoshopped and the screen is not much better than the PW1 that I have, I will send it back.
While I have gadgetitis, I only upgrade my devices when there is a real benefit. I never upgraded from iPad 1 to 2, nor from 3 to 4. |

Yep. Unlike the real Paperwhite, none of the advertised images show shadow at the bottom
