How "ebook-convert *.mobi" works?

Hi All!

For an automated project, I'm trying to figure out what happens when I convert an OEB book to mobi. I tought that it simply packs the html files to the PalmDOC format but there is something special:

If I make a "clean" (almost unformatted) OEB e-book than converts it to mobi and back the new one will have many calibre1, calibre2, etc. CSS-styles. Also HTML comments are lost.

What are these? Are they there for compatibility purposes? Are they generated at packaging to mobi or at unpacking?

Could you please help me find the part of code in calibre which is related to mobi converting or in charge of these styles?

I'm intrested in e-books and would like to understand better the way "it works".

Thanks a lot in advance!

This section of the manual might be a good place to start for an overview of the conversion pipeline.

Thanks! According to this, I only want to use the "output plugin" of the process. So my input would be in format like "processed" (just before passing) and I don't want calibre to format or tidy it.

Is there a way to do this? It seems that ebook-convert does not have any arguments like this.

You cannot, the MOBI OUtput plugin depends on the rest of the conversion pipeline having been run first. If you want more details, read the code, the structure of the code is described in the dsetting up development environment section of the user manual.
