indexing folders ebooks without copying files
Hi,

Is there a way for Calibre to "index" all the epubs located in a folder and subfolders... but without making a new library.

I would like Calibre to consider that the books hierarchy of folder is the library, without copying the files or changing the organization.

There is a sticky discussing why Calibre does not operate that way and is unlikely to ever be changed so that it could.

You can delete all the formats by using the menu after (Leaves as an 'Empty Book')

I am starting to slowly understand the point of having Calibre manage my collection... but it is hard to get detached from filesystem...
I will try the "leave as empty books".

You could also test to do it the other way. Just with a few books to feel the water.

Store the books inside calibre, and use calibre to create a directory tree with folders for genres, series and authors and so on. All based on metadata you specify for the books inside calibre. Or perhaps download automatically. Add new books to calibre, or update metadata, and generate a new folder tree to reflect the updated calibre library.

I would not try the "leave as empty books" it will severely limit what you can do in calibre. Just add the books to calibre and leave your original folder structure intact as a safety net / backup. As you get used to calibre at some point in the future you may find there is no more need for your previous file storage system.

Gmail has been using a label system (vice folders) now for 9 years and even iTunes now has a Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library option enabled by default. So whenever adding songs to the iTunes library it will make a copy of every file and add it to iTunes media folder. Originally iTunes indexed everything by default.

Give it a try for a while hard drive space is cheap, you can do both until you decide one or the other is enough.

@DoctorOhh :Thanks for your message. I am still in the in-between area trying to reach both sides of the bridge, knowing I have to let go, but not quite confident enough to do so.

@Adoby: I like the idea of testing the tree feature with genre.
