I have a Kobo Glo which frequently cuts off the bottoms of some characters on the last line on a "page". Although normally it's only a portion of the below the line letters (so that yet looks like vet, etc), I have seen at least one instance where it essentially cut off at about the halfway point on the line, so that half of each character was on the bottom of one page and half on the top of the next page. Needless to say, it wasn't easy to read either line. Any ideas on how I can remedy this? I can change line spacing, etc, but obviously that might mean only that it affects a different line in the text on each page.
I haven't seen where Kobo allows you to set the bottom margin, which might take care of the problem. It's not usually a major problem, but obviously is an annoyance as I shouldn't have to guess the words on the bottom line. Thanks in advance for any recommendations. SteveK |

Peter- My Kobo is at work, but I'll try to remember to check next week. I am fairly certain it is NOT the latest firmware, as I don't remember any recent updates. Might a more recent firmware version help? If so, how can I "force" an upgrade?
Thanks. SteveK |

The only times I have seen this, it was a book with an embedded font. When I selected a font other than "Document defaults', everything was OK.

I've seen this happen before, where the text on the top line has the top of the letters cut off and the bottom cuts off the letters that extend below the line of type. But I can't really remember what caused it

The descenders are cut off using Kobo Nickel on 2.81. That font has been a mess since day 1--which amazes me since Kobo has made a big deal about this being a custom font developed for Kobo devices.

I see this off and on. I think I see it more when I wake up from sleep. I'm using calibre to transfer and generate kepubs. I'm on 2.6.1b. I'm also using a side loaded font.

I stumbled on this again today in checking out a kepub, and apparently it's not just the Kobo Nickel font. Here's an image with Caecelia font, and it seems to happen only with kepubs. I can't remember seeing it in an epub where the page will appear this way when go you reopen the book, but not all pages, I really don't know why some and not all pages. Once you turn the page, the chopped off text goes back to normal, even if you back up to the previous chopped page, that will display correctly.
Edit: I'm on firmware 2.5.1 btw. |

I've been having this problem on several books lately; primarly when text is justified.

Davidfor - your suggestion to use any font other than document default seems to have solved the problem, as I haven't seen any more lines cut off when I stopped using document defaults. I would have thought that document defaults would have caused fewer problems, but I've had no further problems since selecting another font.
Thanks for the suggestion! SteveK |

"Document default" means to use the fonts that embedded in the book. Selecting one of the one of the other fonts, overrides this. The times I have seen this problem, the book embedded a Charis font. From discussions around here, there are versions of this that have been fiddled with to use different font metrics. I think some of these may result in the renderer getting the position of the text wrong.
As a simple example of what I mean, have a look at where the title of the book is displayed when you use different fonts. With "Georgia", the title is centred with the home and other buttons. With "Gothic" it is displayed noticeably lower. The exact positioning of the letters in a line is at least partly defined by something in a font. I think that if you extracted the embedded font and added it to the device, you would see something similar. |
