Amazon Appstore Now Accepting HTML5 Web Apps – Making It Easy for Developers to Reach Millions of Kindle Fire and Android Customers Worldwide

Amazon today launched web app support in the Mobile App Distribution Program. Developers can now submit URLs for their HTML5 web apps and mobile websites and have Amazon offer that content to millions of Kindle Fire and Amazon Appstore customers in the same, convenient way as native apps. Developers can submit and distribute mobile web content without using third party software or doing any native app development, and they can take advantage of Amazon’s In-App Purchasing API for JavaScript, which provides them the option to build sales of digital goods into their apps. It's essentially just a different programming language. The majority of Android apps are made with Java, which can do just about anything. Because of that, it's a little harder to learn for some people. HTML5 is the latest revision of web standards (which I don't think is even completed yet). For some people, making web pages is easier than creating Java apps. Web apps are much more limited in what they can do. When I program web apps, I spend most of my time figuring out work-arounds for things I can do with no problem in standard desktop applications.

Amazon is offering to publish links to the sites of webapp publishers to make them discoverable and accessible to their Appstore users. Useful to both developers and Appstore customers.
They are also offering their in-app purchasing APIs and payment processing systems (for a fee, natch). Since the Appstore is "curated" one expects that apps that use their APIs will also get better in-store promotion.

If nothing else, it'll let them claim to have a deeper catalog.
