Overstock to Amazon: "If they go to 10 cents, I'll go to 9 cents"

"Overstock.com announced last Thursday that it would be undercutting Amazon book prices by 10 percent. Not to be outdone, Amazon matches the prices...on some titles.'

by Emily Dreyfuss, CNET, July 29, 2013 10:51 AM PDT

continued:

Overstock aggressively challenges Amazon on book prices (CNet)

I have been known to enjoy a good brawl.

In Price War, Amazon Discounts Go Deeper Than Ever
Quote:
Yesterday Amazon.com quietly began discounting many bestselling hardcover titles between 50% and 65%, levels we've never seen in the history of Amazon or in the bricks-and-mortar price wars of the past.
Quote:
The changes appear largely to be in response to an Overstock.com campaign launched this week to be 10% lower than Amazon's on "the roughly 360,000 books sold on both Overstock.com and Amazon.com," according to Internet Retailer. Overstock has said the anti-Amazon campaign will last indefinitely although its site says "one week only."

I've seen this happen in the past. If only someone could have come up with a plan to limit the deep discounting of hardback prices by retailers. Surely someone was worried enough about their flagship products being undervalued to do something about it.

Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

I've never understood why publishers cared if they were getting their asking price, unless they were selling the majority of their books in their own stores.

So, there is the little asterisk on the ad, that says "see restrictions." I click on the ad on the Overstock site, and it takes me to a listing of the titles available. I'm curious as to what the "restrictions" are, and where they are hiding them.

Great marketing.. Now we'll see who has deeper pockets. I'm guessing it ain't Overstock.

I'm rooting for Overstock because they repeatedly rank high on good-company-to-work-for lists. However, you probably are right.

I've been disappointed in Amazon's prices on a variety of merchandise lately; I'm finding things cheaper elsewhere. And when I've reported lower prices, Amazon hasn't price-matched. Plus sales and coupons often bring down prices at other retailers.

Perhaps this is ploy by Overstock to be acquired!

Maybe Overstock is buying into the B&N gloom-n-doom talk and thinks they can tap the anti-amazon market to raise its profile in the online pbook business.
What I want to see if Rakuten (Buy.com) does anything to raise *their* profile.

Overstock is unlikely to poach many buyers from Amazon (PRIME!) with this price war but they *can* and clearly intend to draw buyers from the rest of the market. If it lasts more than the stated week and B&N.com doesn't respond they might end up as market share donors.

There isn't much of a fight over the Australian market given that Overstock's cost to send to Australia is a bit over twice that of Amazon.
