Recommended Palm journal app?
Hey mobilereaders, I'm asking for advice again! I have a small business doing computer consulting and I need a way to record what are more or less journal entries for each job and have them on my Palm for reference. I've only started and I've already run into trouble for not being able to reference what I had previously done for a client. Ideally the journal would have categories (presumably one for each client) and a windows interface, though I think that the latter may be asking too much. Anyone have any ideas? A quick search of PalmSource didn't turn up much. A couple looked okay but had terrible reviews. May try them anyway, but if anyone has any experience with this, please let me know...

ignatz,
There are several ways you could go about this, using an app like SmartList to Go by www.dataviz.com or HandDbase by www.ddhsoftware.com to built a custom database and forms. You could also use Agendus by www.iambic.com where you could add each client as a contact and make journal entries allowing you to track what, where and when you did something for each client. Another plus about Agendus is that it integrates with Mapopolis. You can store a location or address entry for a contact and click an icon that will open Mapopolis and take you to that address or set it as your destination for turn-by-turn navigation, with or without a GPS. I did find one at FreewarePalm called Jotter that's pretty good, but there's no easy way to get info in from the PC. I think that the best solution may be MobileDB, which I already have. I can upgrade it to connect to MS Access and though it's not as easy as a hotsync, I can dump the databases back and forth. (And if I go over to the dark side, I can carry my database with me.) Text entry on the Palm is just not good enough to write more than a few lines!

Ah, thanks ballistic! I posted before I saw your reply. SmartList and HandDbase both look very good, though I can get the functionality I want cheaper with SmartList. Yah, I think that being able to define and modify my own fields will beat any premade that I could lay hands on. Very exciting, thanks for the help!

The best software to be used as a journal is, in my opinion, DayNotez (www.natara.com). Moreover, the desktop app is more than worth its weight in gold. I log in anything from my regular blood pressure data to business to meetings. Another option is Bonsai made by the same developers. It is an outliner that is a powerful journaling app as well. I use it for my personal Bible study and Sunday messages. Check out Natara and see if its a good fit for your needs. They're tech support is cordial and efficient as well. Good luck!

Simple idea involving no extra apps (in other words, no extra $):
Add a note to the contact entry of every one of you customers: 08/25/2004 Windows interface? Sure! Palm desktop.Formated hard drive 08/26/2004 Installed Windows XP 08/27/2004 Received payment (800USD) Is it too limited? Well, it depends on your needs, of course. But, it is easy to access and takes into account the fact that "text entry on the Palm is just not good enough to write more than a few lines!" |

Good tip, Francesco. Once I used 10 different programs for 10 different things. Over time, I figured that Palm Desktop + Datebk/or/Agendus can do most of the things I need. Not sure if it is sufficient for the others here, though!

I'm trying SmartList and I think that it is exactly what I want. Francesco, I like the basic approach too, but I like the total flexibility that comes with a database. I can add or remove fields as my needs change and I can readily organize or search for whatever I want. I'm also using it to put together a "knowledge base" of PC tricks for personal use. Nothing like going to a client's house, seeing the problem, and thinking, "I know that I solved this once, but what did I do?..." Set it up with keywords and category. Sweet stuff! One application does it all for me too...

ignatz,
Good luck with SmartList to Go. There's a Yahoo! group with a lot of useful information and support, although I'm not a big fan of Yahoo! groups personally. I've found a number of great uses for SLTG, including tracking my our Netflix rentals with a "turnover rate/price per movie" formula to remind us to watch and return movies quickly to get the most out of the monthly fee.
