Remove Library - Are you sure ?

I don't get an "Are you sure" question when a real library is removed.

I appreciate its easy to get the real library back if it's done inadvertently, but I'd rather have the opportunity to say No to an "Are you sure" question.

IMO it's inconsistent to have an "Are you sure" on remove virtual library , but none on remove real library. With the latter there's the prospect that I might compound my mistake by deleting real data when the library folder is opened (Ctrl/A, Shift/Del), whereas there is little prospect of that happening if I remove a Virtual Library.

And both "Are you sure" questions should have "Do you want to see this again" check boxes - the one for Remove VL doesn't have this option.

You lose nothing by removing a real library, you lose something -- the search used to create it -- by removing a VL. Hence the difference.

I can if when the Library directory is opened I hit the Ctrl/A, Shift Del. Yes I should have checked to ensure I was in the right directory, but I didn't. Whoops there went my Journals library instead of that 'temporary' library I called Keep for Now.

For me that wasn't too serious, because I had backup as of last evening, and the two items I added to Journals this morning were in 'todays updates' directory but... I can't speak for others who might pull the trigger as I did.

But if my daily backup disk had been bad (as it was last week, or I didn't have one), then I would had to resort to other means like disk recovery utilities, and/or re-downloading articles, journal back issues etc.

I can recreate a search out of thin air, or brain power at least. Actually, I keep empty clones of my three permanent libraries - so if I inadvertently removed a VL, I can copy its search criteria from its empty clone.

But that's not what Kovid means. You don't lose anything by deleting a library within Calibre. What you do outside it with your filemanager of choice is your own lookout.

I fully appreciate that, but on removing a library its Calibre that throws me into Windows Explorer, I don't navigate there under my own steam.

As someone who spent 40+ years in software development I also appreciate that one of the features of 'good human interface engineering' is preventing users from shooting themselves in the foot. My overall assessment of Calibre in this regard is that it's very good - with a few minor exceptions, this being one of them.

What I'm suggesting is that the dialogue one gets when a library is removed (see attachment), is popped before the library is removed from the list of libraries

The blue i would change to a yellow !, the wording would change to The library <path> will be removed from calibre. However, the files will remain on your computer, if you want to delete them, you will have to do so manually. and there would be OK, Cancel and Copy to clipboard buttons

How many times have you read on this Board, Calibre is for Programmers? Too Many.

The message is for Normal folk. You know, Those who had problems switching from W95(c) to W98 because of the UI differences.
(And how many of us here run their OS with the 'Classic Interface' enabled? )

I suggest most so called 'Normal folk' would prefer 'prevention to repair' - and that's what I've argued for here.

But I'll say it before someone else does, I can always download the source and change it to suit my own idiosyncratic wishes.

Most "normal folk" use a mouse so would not have had the same problem .
