Harry Potter will be 33 on July 27

I guess it’s that time of year again. Harry Potter will be 33 years old on July 27. I only just caught on to the fact that people are holding birthday parties for the boy wizard--in bookstores!

It reminded me of the years we waited expectantly for the next Harry Potter book to be published and took the kids into actual bookstores in the middle of the night so they could buy each new volume as soon as possible. Then it was heads-down reading until it was finished.

Too bad there isn’t anything quite like it anymore.

When my youngest decided he was too old to go, I was embarrassed to go alone. It was always a wildly exciting event.

My children never outgrew dressing up and going to the midnight book releases, and they are currently 20 and 22. My 22 yo would go to one today if he could. I made us wizard robes (3 sets for my son as he grew) and we had to drive an hour each way to the bookstores (that made for long nights). My daughter wouldnm't dress up with me for the movie releases, but my son did.

BTW, what's with the July 27 bit? Harry's birthday is the 31st, and Neville's is on the 30th.

Oh gosh, I remember driving to a bookshop just before midnight for one of the books and joining the queue (I should have left earlier, it was a long queue). I had to buy two books when I got to the front of the queue of course, no way would either I or my son wait till the other finished!

You're right! I just checked and the birthday party is at 11 am on the 27th at my the bookstore where I live. Probably because it's a Saturday. The event is RSVP and costumes are encouraged.

Are you referring to the book or the character? Because Harry Potter the character's birthday is July 31st not July 27th.

It probably is on the 27th because that's a Saturday. It will be Harry's 33rd birthday this year, as he was born in 1981.

Does anyone else say a little "Happy birthday Gred and Forge" on April Fools Day every year?

Hang on. If he was born in 1981 then he's 32 this year, not 33.

Is there a reference somewhere in the books that mentions 1991? Or a year at all?

I'm not sure if any dates were used in the books at all, or if she mentioned them in interviews. Not without doing a LOT of research. Well, more research than I want to do this morning because I'm sick. I know she has spoken of those particular years and they are the accepted years of his birth and entrance into Hogwarts.

Okay, here is the accepted reference site that even Rowling used to look up facts when she didn't want to dig through her notes. hp-lexicon.org She completely approved of the site and its information (until she decided she might put out HP encyclopedia some day) .
