First eReader - good time to buy now ?
Hello,
I am looking to buy my first reader. I've looked at all the devices available and my choice is the "Kobo Glo". But Kobo usually releases their new devices in september/october so I don't know if I should buy now or wait. I think the frontlight was a big improvement and was worth waiting. Do you think there will be something for the next generation that could be worth waiting for ? Also, there have been some discounts on the Mini and the Touch, so I wonder if the Glo will get one soon. Last question, is it worth buying a 3 year warranty for the Glo ? (the price of the warranty is 30% of the device). Thanks ![]() |

The best time to buy is, when what you whant is awaylable. When it has all features you need.
To wait for the next, perhaps better is no good idea. You are then allwais waiting for the next, the next, the next..., but never buying. Because you ar waitung for features, you perhaps will like. |

I understand what you are saying. But if you had bought a Kobo Touch the day before the Glo was released, you'd be disappointed, no ?

I do agree with the above posters. It's about what you want in the reader. If it has all the features you want go for it now if it doesn't then wait. I don't know where you live but the Nook simple touch and kobo glo have been heavily discounted in many countries. You could pick up one of those as they are so cheap to tide you over until all the new devices are released later this year. |

I live in France. The Kobo Glo has never been discounted here.
Actually, the Kobo Glo has everything I need right now. But who knows if the next generation won't have a killer feature? I want to buy a reader that will last. I won't buy a new one in 6 months. |

I personally wouldn't get one. But if you want one, and the extended warranty was through Kobo, I would advise against it. There are many reports of atrocious customer service for Kobo. YMMV.

Just guessing, but the Glo might be due for a reduction in price if Kobo does come up with TNBT (the next big thing) later this year.
It might be worth the wait. Sure X device might have all the features you want and need right now....until that bright shiny sexy device forces you to realize you really do need all the new bells and whistles that device X has. And you must have it now. Now ! Last edited by mr_nihilism; 07-11-2013 at 11:49 AM. |

Personally I think that if you've found a device you want, don't bother waiting for the upgrade. The upgrade may have features which you don't like, rather than ones you do.
I'm not sure about France, but in the UK your statutory rights make an extended warranty just not worth the money. You're covered by consumer rights ("not fit for the purpose"). However, the law may be entirely different in France. |

I agree with BookCat about not waiting. In my experience, except for the occasional big feature like screen lighting, there is generally little enough added from one generation of ereader to the next to make the next model a must have. And the price of ebook readers is getting cheap enough that if such feature is released, its not like you are taking a big hit. Also, having a backup reader can be useful.. just in case.

Thanks everyone for your answers.
And no, I'm not gonna buy an iPad mini. I want an e-ink reader, not a device I won't even be able to use outdoors. |

The Kobo Glo is fantastic. Don't wait, buy now. And don't bother with the 3 year warranty.
They recently had a coupon on the Glo but it was unadvertised. I think I read about it on blog.the-ebook-reader.com |

If you buy at the "FNAC", try negociating. I saw a guy last week who managed to get a sleep cover for free because he purchased a discounted (half price) 3 years warranty...
I wouldn't count too much on a new device being released in September. A new firmware, maybe, but you could upgrade then. I think the next really big evolution would be (good) colour e-readers and that's not going to happen this september at Kobo. Seriously, what new hardware are you hoping for? |

I think the OP is thinking of starting out relatively cheap, otherwise they'd look at the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Glo and just buy both, Last edited by ndixon; 07-15-2013 at 08:21 AM. |
