Anyone use Netgalley
I just signed up for this and had a couple of title already accepted.
www.netgalley.com I was wondering if there was a way to get them readable on the reader. PDF is horrible, and the kindle version is just as bad. |

I've joined up, but to be honest, have so many books in my TBR list that the thought of adding even more books just kind of freaks me out right now...

Some of them provide downloadable epubs. And a few publishers, if you write feedback explaining that you won't be able to review it because it's only in PDF, will then provide an epub version.
But it's really annoying that there doesn't seem to be any way to find out whether an epub is available before you request the book. |

Yeah I sent them an eMail. I'm in pretty good with one of the authors, and that book isn't even being sent to my kindle for some reason, so hoping that it'll be okay.
The other publisher is sending a physical copy ![]() |

The PDFs are really awful. Some of them have been at least readable when sent to Kindle but some have kept all the page header title & author information and page footer page numbers etc in the text, with completely random paragraphs, fonts etc. I have one book lined up for reading & reviewing that is one of those bad PDFs and I think I'll just brave it and read it on the iPad.
So far, it's mostly been PDFs for me, with only a few epubs. I haven't tried to contact the publishers - I'm feeling lucky enough to have got the review copies in the first place, being a non-US, non-UK person with a moderate following on Goodreads (the primary place where I post my reviews), so I suppose I haven't wanted to "push it". |

I've contacted the publisher for the one that wasn't sending right, and I couldn't read the PDF...they've gotten back to me and are sending a file my way via whispercast (which I guess is different than whispernet).
I think it helped that I've already interviewed the author and done some stuff with him. Hopefully I'll be able to do that in the future. |

I know the few ARCs I got from a publisher were PDF as well. It takes some work converting them for my Kindle. I used Mobipocket Creator then Word to clean it up before throwing it into Calibre to convert to format of my choice so I could read it on my eReader.

I have only received 2 ARC's so far from Netgalley and they both just went to my kindle once I had it all set up on that website. Just a click.
They looked fine to me, for ARC's that is. So I guess I got lucky so far. |

That was the problem with one, it never came to my kindle...however the publisher graciously sent me an advance copy. I should be able to get to it before it's release in September.
The other one is sending me a physical copy. Which I'm fine with. When reviewing I actually prefer physical since it helps me keep the stack in check! |

Fortunately the publisher (Baen) doesn't use DRM so I downloaded the ePub version and converted it to Mobi |

the incredible thing about this whole system, is since joining, the publishers have been incredibly supportive. I was just approved for the latest 3 star wars novels (yay, excited about those since I'm an EU Star Wars nerd), and had a problem receiving them.
Random House Del Rey sent them right out to me when contacting them. |

What formats do the publishers send you? If it's a PDF, is it one where the text is centered in the middle of the page, there are corner registration marks, and several inches of white space on each page?
Some of the Hugo Award nominee publishers do this and I hate it because they are not readable on my Nook. The full page shrinks the text to a size that is unreadable, and when I increase the font size so that it is readable, the formatting is lost and the book becomes unreadable again. |
