Deep thoughts about ebooks

A new site devoted to deep ponderings about ebooks and their imminent downfall by those that should know.

There has been a tsunami of stories in the news lately about how the ebook revolution has begun to slow down.

To that I say - Well, duh!

I mean, let's face it, fads are great, the novelty, the freshness of a new thing does have its charm. However, after a while the new becomes old and the thrill of trying something new dies.
And so it will be with the ereader.

Ereaders!
Really?
You want me to buy an extraneous device just so I can read a book?
A book?

Books are some of the simplest, and yet, most elegant of man's creations.
Not only that, but with mild care the book can last centuries and enrich future generations. Does anyone really think that an ereader will last a decade much less centuries?

Everyone thinks they have a novel in them, and these days, it seems like everybody wants to get the damn thing out.

Since the beginning of the fad known as Self-Publishing, innumerable talentless hacks have debased the world of literature by cramming their vacuous attempts at fiction onto a defenseless reading public.

Yes many things start out as novelties, and yes many fads fade, but I don't think the ebook reader will be one of them. There were two other novelties that came about roughly 40 yrs apart that didn't fade as most fads do. They are known as the movies and television today. Stage plays are still performed, but now you can see similar entertainment at a distance both in space and time because of those two one time novelties. The newness of ebook readers will no doubt rub off eventually. I know I don't have quite the excitement that I did when I first held one (borrowed through the public library) though I do still find that I'd be unwilling to go back to not having one. They will become part of every day life from here on in I think, just like the movies and television did.

Ah, ok. Sometimes its hard to know. Still there have been a few threads where someone predicts the end of the ebook and I always have to wonder how they came to that conclusion.

After just twenty-three short years, 4,762 rejection slips, two failed marriages and a teensy weensy mental breakdown, I finally have a publishing contract and received a fat $5,000.00 advance.
Well $5,000, minus my agent's fee, and taxes of course, but that still leaves me with a cool three grand plus.
Although, I guess, when you subtract the expense of all those conferences I went to over the years to pitch to agents, the gas, the tolls, the wear and tear on my car, and also the cost of postage, printing and envelopes to send out those queries and manuscripts, that maybe, maybe what's left isn't much.
Hell, looking at it that way, I suppose... well, I'm actually in the red.
But none of that matters, and do you know why none of that matters?
Well, I'll tell you why,
It's because I did things the Right Way.
And now I can say with pride that I AM A REAL AUTHOR!

Interesting that for some authors at least, traditional publishing is still thought of as being the definition of being "a real author".

Absolutely true though. I run into/across them almost daily. I just posted a link to the mentioned site on my local SF Writers group. I'm expecting either no response or a bit of pushback......
