CC not working. advice please
I cannot get the CC app installed yesterday to my Nexus 7 to work. I have followed the instructions re the IP addresses. Before I spend any more time could someone please advise me if the following is the problem.
I downloaded Calibre to my laptop in the UK where I live. I downloaded Calibre Companion to my Nexus in Cyprus where I am on holiday. Is this causing the app to fail? Will my Calibre only work with the app in the UK? Sorry if this is a silly question to the more tech savvy people but I want to rule this out. If this is not the problem some help in getting the app to work would be appreciated, thanks, Pat |

CC (and almost everything else today) works on a LAN. Your Router/firewall separates your LAN from the WAN for safety and security (and because your ISP only allows 1 IP ![]() You need to have done: Assign/reserve a fixed (LAN) IP for the host Set 'Port Forwarding' (allows a WANside port request to a preset host-server) to the designated IP Setup a method for obtaining the current WAN IP of your router. I assume you have your laptop with you while you are on holiday, and that you are attempting to use the hotel's Wi-Fi to make a "wireless device" connection. If this is is the case then it will almost certainly not work. Reason: the vast majority of hotels that offer Wi-Fi block connections between devices in the hotel. This is done for security. They do not want any possible responsibility for someone getting their computer hacked by the person in a nearby room.
To do what I think you want to do, you would have needed to set up a calibre content server on the internet before you left in the way theducks describes. It might be possible to do something with VPNs (virtual private networks) but the complexity is very high. If you purchased CC to solve a specific problem while on holiday and find you can't then you might want a refund, which we will be glad to provide. Use CC's help dialog to make the request. |

If you are using your Laptop in the same location as your Tablet, you might be able to bypass the hotels policy (but then, why not just side load).
You might be able to set (carefully) your Laptop to allow ad-hoc (the default is infrastructure) connections. Be sure to set your firewall to only allow incoming from your intended device(s) |

Thank you for replying . I am not in a hotel. I am in my home here. I'm afraid the advice given is to advanced for me and I don't understand it.

Do you have your laptop running calibre with you in Cyprus, connected to the same home Wi-Fi as your tablet? If so, the "how to connect" FAQ answer should help. If not then there isn't much you can do until you return to the UK.

There is no reason to believe his laptop and Tablet aren't in the same room. I think your directions in post three may just be clouding the issue. Hopefully the OP will be able to clarify his position and work things out.

You make a good point. The OP confused things a bit by saying Loaded Calibre in the UK. I just assumed he left the rig running in the UK since Calibre (and CC) are not listed as having any regional limits

My laptop and Nexus 7 are both in my home in Cyprus. I have already had Calibre on my laptop for some time and it was downloaded in the UK. I find it very useful.
I came across CC while browsing on the Nexus in Cyprus. I have been using drop box to transfer books so thought I would give CC a try and downloaded while here in Cyprus. I wanted to know if downloading in 2 different countries was causing my problem. Assuming I can follow theducks and manage to do what he says does that mean that I will have to do that whenever I leave a country and use a different internet provider? Regards, Pat |

The only reason for doing what TheDucks posted is if you have your laptop with calibre at one location and your Nexus at another, distant, location, and you want to access your library via the internet.

![]() You did 'Start' the wireless connection in Calibre (Sharing Icon) after you set it up [If using that mode in CC] or You did 'Start' the 'Content Server' in Calibre (Sharing Icon) after you set it up [If using that mode in CC] <- you can test this with any browser using the same IP ![]() Both of these have OPTION settings to Automatically start with Calibre. Otherwise you need to do it every time you want to use CC after a Calibre start. I suspect your Laptop firewall is blocking those ports. Or you have a conflict (some other 'service' is running on the laptop that uses the chosen port) The last ![]() |

Your best bet is to review the info in the link I gave in post 2. Then return with more info.

I. Have followed the instructions given by Chaly and I still cannot connect CC on my Nexus 7 and Calibre on my laptop.
I have Calibre version 0.9.37 on my laptop. Content Server 192.168.10.19 Port 808 Wireless Device 192.168.10.19 Port 9090 Device IP 192.168.10.22 Firewall allows Calibre. I have a VPN and it is turned off. IP provider is Cytanet. Is there anything I have missed? Regards, Pat |
