Some questions about Iliad

Okay, I've used the Sony 500 and 505 and now I'm thinking about moving on up to an Iliad, mainly because I tend to proofread texts, and the bookmarking facility on the 505 just isn't really sufficient for this. I have some questions about the Iliad that I haven't really been able to find answers to on the forums (perhaps I am missing them).

1) Does the Iliad handle .html0 BD files reasonably well? Can it be set to recognize that file type as HTML and open it? This is typically what I have saved previous projects as.

2) How does the scribble mode work- is any page that you write on top of saved to a scribble list? Can you easily navigate through pages that you have annotated?

3) Is there any support or hack for Chapter navigation with HTML similar to the way chapter navigation works on a Sony Reader?

4) Can the handwriting recognition software be used to edit HTML files directly on the device?

5) Is there anything else that you would think someone considering this purchase should know?

Thanks for your advice!

Dear maggotb0y, don't think nobody read your question, its just a difficult answer, at least I cannot do.

Generally I'd say you go in with a bit too high expections. What the Iliad is good at, is let you read texts + allow you to scribbling on them.

@4. Unless I'm mistaken, you won't find to be a supreme HTML-editor. Infact its not a good editor after all. However there is an OCR field that allows you to scribble a line that is filled in forms... However at least from my experience I'm still faster using the onscreen keyboard, but I didn't train myself yet to scribble in a way the OCR likes it...

OK, let's have a go at answering these questions...

1) The iLiad will read HTML files, but it's not particularly good at it. Page turning is very slow. If I want to read an HTML file, I tend to reformat it at iLiad page size and save as PDF.

2) Scribble will only work on PDF documents. The scribbled stuff is saved as a separate file, which can be merged with the PDF on the PC, but you don't get separate files for each page which has been scribbled on.

3) No

4) No

5) I'd agree with axel77, you're expecting much more of the iLiad than it delivers. Or at least, different things. As an ebook reader it's great, as a thing for scribbling in the margins of books, or making handwritten notes on, its great. As an HTML editor, it's useless, but then again it's not designed as an HTML editor.

I agree with the other responses. PDF was the original iLiad target format, and is still the only format with markup capability.

HTML support is marginal. For single-file HTML, FBReader is best. Otherwise I would convert to the MOBI format, but that would still not allow you to comment on the text.

In fact, the Kindle may be better suited to your needs. You would again have to convert to MOBI, but then bookmarks and comments can be made via the keyboard. Comments are saved in separate text files, but these are fully searchable.

Thanks guys, for your answers. Looks like I'll stick to the Sony Reader for now and wait for the next gen (or the next next next gen) of readers to come along that has better support for marking up files.

I'm glad I asked before I spent the $700!
