does it lessen the impact of a review?
Is the impact lessened (for you as author as well as for you as reader) if a glowing review is from someone you gave the book to specifically for review, as opposed to them having purchased it?

As long as the person is not a relative or close friend (and of course made that apparent in their review), I personally do not think so.

Not to me. Books are not so expensive that a free book should induce a severely biased review. Video games cost much more yet many major review sites get free advance copies.
Now, if you gave me a car my review of it might have a bit too much confirmation bias. Last edited by Penforhire; 06-20-2013 at 01:33 PM. |

I don't think so. Besides, if I feel misled by a review I say so in my review!

I think I would be more likely to suspect a glowing review from someone after having given them a free copy of a book I'd written. If they had bought the copy and given it that kind of review then I'd know better that they had really liked it I think.

I agree with crich 70. I wouldn't, however, dismiss a glowing review by someone who had been given the book to review. Like VydorScope, I would only dismiss a review if it came from someone close to the author.
