Post Wi-Fi and Iliad

I'm a Kindle owner and am pretty happy overall except for the fact that I live out of EVDO range.

From what I've read in this forum it appears that currenly the only thing WiFi can be used for on the Iliad is to download updates and surf the net.

I'd be interested in buying an Iliad if I could at least use it to wirelessly download books from Feedbooks and Manybooks.

Can it currently be used for that purpose?

Thanks in advance.

BTW I'm on a Mac.

So I download the zip onto the computer then transfer it over to the Iliad after opening it?

And will it work with a Mac as well as PC?

Sorry to be so dense but that thread is mostly about 'work in progress' and I couldn't find a simple description about the program on Feedbooks.

You need to have the the shell access package installed first:
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Ilia...ust-do-step.5D

After that, just unzip the package and copy it over to the iLiad, click on the icon to install it, and away you go. You need to get yourself a free account with Feedbooks, but after that you can download books direct from the Feedbooks site to your iLiad via wifi. You can also subscribe to RSS feeds on the website, then sync with them directly on the iLiad. It won't connect to ManyBooks, though. The software is independent of your PC, so it doesn't matter what sort you have. Just run it on the iLiad, it will connect to wifi automatically, let you search for books and download the ones you want, and disconnect from wifi when you quit.

Thanks. So I won't have a problem syncing up with a Mac after I unzip the package?
I've read the Irex software is not too Mac friendly (I realize this is not native Irex software we're discussing here).

And BTW carandol, thanks for introducing me to Richard Kerley, in a roundabout way (via your post).

Shouldn't be a problem, the iNewsStand software is only active when you're running it; as soon as you quit, the iLiad is back to normal. I've got a Linux PC, so I can't speak with great authority on the Mac, but as far as I understand it, the main problem is that registering your iLiad is impossible with the Mac's built-in browser, and until you're registered you can't download updated iLiad software from the IDS service. If you use Firefox, its fine. You can't use the PC software that comes with the iLiad, but you can just plug it in via USB and it shows up as a mass storage device for adding books from the computer.

As for Richard Herley, you should thank Puffball for that. I hadn't heard of him either until last week when he posted a link to his page!

Sounds good. Firefox is my browser of choice. I've also got an Asus eee PC which is a Linux computer but it is a chore to type something out on those tiny keys without making an error.

You're right Puffball was there first. I think you & I were among the first to donate to him.

I just got an email with Peter Watts and directed him to our board. Maybe he will begin posting as well.

Karma to you Sir! And thank you.

I got my Iliad yesterday, downloaded the Shell Access Package, followed by the zip file. It works great and I LOVE my Iliad. Makes the Kindle look like a toy by comparison.

Now if I could just make my 96 Kindle books readable on the Iliad.

Anyone want to volunteer to help? Any emails will be appreciated.

If they are AZW books (as most Kindle e-books are), see Mobipocket Decoder Tool.

You need Python and mobidedrm.py. Have a look at darkreverser's Weblog (google for it), he has a blog entry about how to get started with Python. I'm afraid I have to talk in riddles as DRM removal is a very hot topic...
