Kindle Paperwhite - Load Via USB or Via Email
I just got myself a Kindle Paperwhite, I ended up going with the paperwhite because I was able to find so many sites that link to sales for kindle books.
I have Calibre setup and I am using that to store some public domain books and books that I end up getting from other ebook stores. My question is, I have an iPad and an iPhone that I don't plan on reading on regularly but I also don't plan on carrying my kindle with me. So do I load my books via the personal documents email option and just deal with the "Personal" tag, or do I "Send to Device" using "USB" and what happens with the iDevices? |

If you send to device via USB, the books will not be available to your other devices via Amazon's archive. I don't know if emailing the file to your Kindle will keep it in the archive, either. You can use a Send to Kindle app to send the books to your Kindle, and there is a checkbox that you can check to save the document to your archive. It will then be available for download to your other devices.

You can't download via USB for iDevices, there is no option for this in the drop-down list when you select Transfer via USB. If you had books from other sources, without DRM, you can transfer those via iTunes, by dragging and dropping them into the files section for the Kindle application.

Another option is to store your books in a cloud service such as Dropbox. You'll then be able to open them on your iPad and iPhone from anywhere.

Thanks all for the Comments.
Harry, I'm not sure dropbox would work because the feature I was looking for was the fact that I can have the same book on 2 devices and have it keep my current page across the devices with WhisperSync. However, I may still do this so my calibre library is backed up and I have access everywhere. It seems that the best option is to use the personal documents, it definitely does what I am looking for, I just didn't want to have those books have "Personal" over the cover. Oh well thanks for your help all. |

I was in a similar situation, having recently bought a Kindle PW, and also reading on Android phone & tablet kindle apps.
I found that I can - upload a .mobi to each device with non-Amazon-cloud tooling (e.g. calibre usb upload, dropbox download, etc...). The page syncing would work with whispersync, but not the syncing of notes/bookmarks. The book was marked as a book though in the PW - upload a .mobi to each device via 'email-to-kindle' => full syncing of pages & notes => but the PW shows it as a personal doc. I prefer the 2nd solution, for the full syncing. I understand you're on iOS, not Android - I dunno if that is gonna give you all different user experience from the above. |
