Hello Everyone, Guten Tag!
I just got a PRS-505. And I have been wading throught the Sony Ebook site deciding on my 100 free Classics. So far I have downloaded, The Bible, The US Constitution and Common Sense. [Side Note: no I am not a Bible thumping fundamentalist...you got to start somewhere with 100 downloads....any suggestions?] Anybody using libprs500 on a Mac (or Windows Vista)? So far I have not been too impressed with the Sony software. It is unusually slow...I did a search and it never returned....(that same search on the web site return almost instantly)...kind of stark looking...maybe they should consider hiring a graphic artist. Looking forward to exploring the forums here. Aufwiedersehen...or maybe I should say, Aufwiederlesen!!! Bob |

Hi bob.breitling and welcome to the Forum. I got a 505 back in January and like it a lot. I downloaded about 40 Classics then saw how many there were here and on other sites. Since there are so many, I've never gotten around to downloading the other free ones from Sony.

Bob, you might look at the free ebooks here in our ebooks section at MobileRead. RWood did a great job formatting Thomas Paine's Common Sense (in volume I of Paine's writings). Note the use of italics, illustrations, etc. My experience is that most of the books that people have put time into formatting for MobileRead are much nicer to read than the ones from Sony. I also have 50 free classics from Sony but have only read one of them and prefer to look here first.
Definitely, if the Sony software seems to hang on you, go back and try again. Happens all the time. And welcome! |

What I find works best is to pug in the 505 and then run eBook Library. I don't find it slow. What you might be experiencing is the pagination that eBook Library does. It sorts out the pagination of each eBook and writes the info to an XML file. So yes, it does take a little bit longer to transfer, but you then do not have to wait for the 505 to do the pagination for you which is definitely slower then eBook Library doing it on the fly.

Welcome to MobileRead bob.breitling
![]() I have had the original Sony PRS-500 for over a year and and yes, the Sony software is a bit slow transferring files to the unit. But it is faster than transferring files to an add-in card and then waiting for the unit to reformat and paginate the files on the unit when you access them there. (Then again the PRS-500 is a USB 1.1 device.) vivaldirules: I am glad that you liked the Thomas Paine. Thank you for the kind words. |

RWood,
Thanks for the welcome. I downloaded your Thomas Paine Vol I ebook and I would have to agree with VR that it is much nicer then Sony's Classic ebook. The picture of TP on the front cover of your ebook is very nice touch! What tools/programs to you use to do your most excellent work? and what is the basic process? I'd like to give it a try. Thanks in advance for any advice.... Bob |

Bob, I'm not sure what tools RWood uses but I've used Book Designer which is described and available free here. Before you try using it, I recommend that you first read Harry T's excellent tutorial. There's a link on that wiki page.
