How often should I charge K3 I am not using?

I have Kindle Paperwhite and I stopped using my K3 completely. I needed it once, and the battery was completely gone, I couldn't use it all. After I've managed to recharge it fully and it started working again, I now want to charge it regularly enough so I don't have to go through the whole process again.
But how regularly is that? And should I power it off after charging before I leave it in the drawer? I don't want to sell it, I want to have it as a back up should anything happen to PW.
Does anybody have any tactics with their old K3?

As discussed here at length, you can't power off a Kindle (despite what Amazon claim). I'd suggest charging once a month.
