Save Template question

My save template looks like this:
{author_sort} - {series} {series_index} - {title}

This is fine. It makes me happy... unless the book does not have a series. And then I end up with "Twain, Mark - - White Fang".

So I took at look at Calibre's template editor. Looks powerful. Also, incredibly not user-friendly for those of us that do not play with whatever language it's based upon.

So, my question: How do I make the " - {series} {series_index}" conditional upon there actually being something in the series field?

BTW Author and Series can clash if your series has different authors

When series is not present, this is good.

However, when series is present, it results in this:
"Pullman, Philip - His Dark Materials - 2 - The Subtle Knife"

I modified it to this, and all is well:
{author_sort} - {series}{series_index:| | - }{title}

For my save to disk..

I also went only the first author on save to disk to control the filename size

{author_sort:list_item(0,&)}
