After discovering the Sony TH55 in another thread, I've begun to drool over the prospects of it. I'm especially excited about a full-size screen (480x320) since I spend a lot of time reading on my current Palm, the Tungsten E. WiFi seems like it would be cool too, though I'm not sure I would really use it. The price is still too high for me though! And it set me to wondering: what other Palms or Clies have full-size screens? The T3 does obviously, and the T2 I think? Are there other Clies with that golden feature?
Urggh! I was so happy with my T|E, but now I've got the bug for something with more juice to it! Damn... |

I'd go for the TH55 right now if you want a palm-based PDA with a nice screen plus WiFi.

The Clies with keyboards are interesting, but they seem like overkill to me. I don't do much composing with my PDA, though perhaps I would if I had WiFi, maybe IM'ing or something. Given how roughly I treat mine, I feel like the keyboards are just one more thing to break. Yah, the TH55 is making me drool, but I try as I might, I just can't justify the expense for the near future... I'll have to hope for a financial fluke, or perhaps a price drop by my birthday in October. How much longer is Sony going to produce the TH55s?
BTW, for a listing of all the available Palm-based PDAs, the PDA buyers guide has a page for Clies and one for Palms and the others that helped me see what is out there. |

Off the top of my head, the following have 480x320 screens (or 320x480, depending on how you rotate it).
Tungsten T3 Zodiace (both models, I believe) TH55 Clie UX40 / UX 50 Clie's NX70 Clie models (don't think these rotate, however) Garmin IQue If you want something with HORSEPOWER, as well as Screen Real Estate for a PalmOS, your top THREE choices will be PalmOne T3, Tapwave Zodiac (preferably Z2, if you can afford it), or Garmin iQue. The Clie's, while good and great, are simply going to be obsolete VERY fast and will soon become a niche commodity for those only interested in having a very specific need. |

Thanks for the list derek. That's just what I was looking for.
I'm probably missing something pretty obvious, but since the Clie's run Palm OS, won't everything continue to work on them? I mean, there won't be much in the way of new products I suppose, but there enough out there that there will be accessories and software for some time yet, right? I'm surprised to see how much less you can get the T3 for now, esp. compared to the TH55. I would have thought Sony's would go down first. But Sony is still selling the TH55 on their website, so either they're still wrapping up production, or they're selling down a large inventory... |

I personally have a Palm T3, so I can't speak from actual usage of any of the Clie's. I *want* to say, though nothing to substantiate, so someone please chime in here who knows for sure, that the mitigating factors against the Clie's would be mainly Rotating Screen (going from 320x480 to 480x320 mode) and Flashable ROM (for upgrading the OS). Speaking of which, it may not even BE updated once the OS6 updates are released by the various manufacturers due to sony's proprietary hardware designs.
/shrug/ sorry I dont know more at the moment. |

I have the UX50, and have been very pleased with its screen quality and durability. I know that some have said that having both WiFi and Bluetooth in a PDA is overkill, but I use both functions. When I'm near a Starbucks, at a hotel, or at home, I connect via WiFi. When I'm elsewhere, I use Bluetooth to connect to the internet with my cell phone's GPRS data stream. It works pretty well here in the U.S., but is even more useful overseas where coverage is better. I've been in some tiny towns in eastern Europe and been able to surf the web wirelessly when it's very likely I was the only person in town with any sort of computer.
The UX50 is also remarkably durable. It's much more rugged than my old Palm IIIxe. The shell is made of metal. The keyboard looks tiny in photos, but with the way the buttons are raised, I can bang out fairly complex paragraphs very quickly with few or no errors. My big problems with it are: 1. The browser (Netfront) sometimes crashes, and I'm unable to locate a source on the web to see if there is a possible update. 2. Battery life isn't great. It definately has to be dropped in the charger every day or two. 3. Too many programs can't figure out that it's wide-screen, and they either crash or don't display correctly. I wish there was a feature to change the screen orientation. 4. No implicit Mac support, but since it's Bluetooth, Macs will sync with it effortlessly no matter what restrictions Sony tries to place on them. |
