Wrong version displayed or what?

Hi guys. Been a calibre user for years now, but only just registered on the forum.

Hi never had any big problems with Calibre, everything has always been going fine.

But since last year, i've moved to Linux Mint 17.2 (then 17.3). I didn't use the older version in the repository by using apt-get install... i used the method listed on Calibre's website to install the most recent version manually. Which worked fine... but i'm quite a few versions behind, so I've decided to upgrade. Well... It still shows me as on 2.38...

Soooo... i used calibre-uninstall. Reinstalled with the method on the website... no go... still 2.38. So i uninstalled, and tried the method where you can specify a local release file. I made sure to get 2.65.1... i install that... still shows as 2.38!!!

I even tried doing "sudo apt-get remove calibre" and it does confirm that i dont have the package installed...

So did my old version of Calibre leave a version file somewhere that is not getting overwritten by the install script? Am i on the 2.65.1 and it's just not displaying right?

I don't know what else to try...

Thanks!

You either have two calibre installs on your system or you have setup calibre to run from source.

Use which calibre in a terminal to see which calibre is being run and

env | grep CALIBRE

to check if you have stup the environment variable to run from source.

Nothing outputs out of that command.

And 'which calibre' says : /usr/bin/calibre

I went into /usr/bin, and the calibre there is a shortcut that points to /opt/calibre

I did a search on my whole filesystem... i sort it by type to see the programs together, i see /opt/calibre/calibre , and /opt/calibre/bin/calibre

could that be my problem?

No, that's normal. /opt/calibre/calibre is a wrapper that launches /opt/calibre/bin/calibre with some necessary environment variables set.

Then I don't know what's going on.

I ran calibre-uninstall, and made sure apt-get remove calibre was performed just in case.
I downloaded calibre-2.65.1-x86_64.txz
Then i run :
sudo mkdir -p /opt/calibre && sudo rm -rf /opt/calibre/* && sudo tar xvf ~/Downloads/calibre-2.65.1-x86_64.txz -C /opt/calibre && sudo /opt/calibre/calibre_postinstall

It does so with success... but when i run it, i get the same version i had before...

I wanted to go from Mint 17.3 to Mint 18 (clean install)... OR get Kubuntu 16.04 going.... That would get rid of my problem, it's what I might do today or this week.

Are you running the newly created /opt/calibre/calibre or just "calibre"?

Tried both, they both open up 2.38

I've decided to format today and installer a fresher version of Linux. I like mint but it's a bit behind in packages i find. And yes, i'll install Calibre from the install script on the website

Thanks for your help kovidgoyal Oh and thanks for Calibre. I've been enjoying it, it's served me well.
