Help with setting up Content Server on Windoze 7 Pro

I've looked all over the forums, and, unless I've missed something, I can't find the help I need to set up the Content Server of Calibre to allow relatives and friends to access my library.

I'm running Calibre 64-Bit, Windoze 7 Pro, SP1 64-Bit, using Norton 360 and its firewall. I checked the handbook, but it's mostly about Linux, which I use on my old machines, but I'd like to set the server up on my desktop. I've never used Apache or any other such program; so I'm a little lost here.

I have DSL with a wireless router, but I'm hooked up LAN with the desktop I wish to use as my server. I'm using WPA encryption with a password needed to access my wireless. My ISP is Centurylink. I have 1.5/.25 speed.

I've opened the server in Calibre, read the short tutorial there, and I tried to access the server with my laptop with a web browser (Firefox,) but I keep getting an error message and no joy connecting.

If anyone has the time to help me set this up, message me here. It may be helpful to others should a tutorial be here, but should the forum moderators think it better, I have Skype, Facebook, and email or pastebin could be used to communicate. I'm not even against voice on a landline.

I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Can you access it on the same machine it is running on? It would help if you supplied the actual error you see. Also make sure you add the calibre-server.exe file to the firewall's whitelist. This file needs to be allowed access to the outside world.

Here is a tutorial to get it up and running within your own network. One step at a time. Once you have it running locally you will need to forward a port through your router for the outside world to see it.

Yes, I can access it on the same machine. Comes up nicely and works well. Now, when I tried to do it from my Linux laptop, through Firefox, I was using the wireless to which the server was hooked by LAN. Don't know if that would affect the results. Firefox error was something like 404, no such website, or something like that. I'll get back to you after I look at the tutorial and try the suggestions.

which address did you use for the same machines test, 127.0.0.1 or the machines IP (eg 198.162.0.5)?
Have you tried the Laptop connected BY the wired network port?

Can we assume the Laptop can see any files on the server machine?

Ok, now, Sir,

I have been successful in port forwarding my router. I have set a static IP. I can connect on my LAN/Wireless to the Content Server with my laptop. The Calibre Browser page loads fine. Now, I guess, I need to find how to connect to the Content Server over the internet. Will I have to get a permanent internet address? I've never set up a server before, and I've never created a web page; so I'm unfamiliar with this process.

By the way, your tutorial and the links you supplied here were excellent!

There are other options to a Static WAN address: DynDNS or similar can help. My SoHO level Netgear router can even handle that usage on its own, so No PC involved.
If you have a nice (regional) ISP like Sonic.net (plug ), they don't charge an arm and a leg for static IP . Check out your ISP options

My ISP said $20/mo (never happen.) I see there's a bunch of negative aspects to the folks that SPONSOR domain registration. (I'm an extreme cheapskate due to circumstances.) So! I gues should my folks wish to peruse my directory, they can frickin' call me and request my current Isp. Thank you, Sir, for helping me to the point to which I very much enjoy!

@Country0129; take a look at a service mentioned by TheDucks; dyndns

It does look confusing with them; they used to offer a totally free service; now though you need to start with a trial of their DynDNS Pro service which, when the trial ends, will let you still keep a single dynamic host name.

See http://www.dyncommunity.com/question...-accounts.html for more on the free aspect of DynDNS Pro.

Other similar offerings are from DyNS http://www.dyns.cx/ (Look at their FREE dynamic DNS service), FreeDNS http://freedns.afraid.org/, DNSExit http://www.dnsexit.com/Direct.sv?cmd=dynDns

Any of these services should let you select a DNS name which you could then share with friends, and not cost a penny.
