Where do collections come from?

I just did a factory reset on my Clara. I also deleted everything but the .kobo folders on the reader.

I was poking around after logging into my kobo account and to my surprise found a full collection of collections. Mind you most of them were empty, with the exception of kobo books I may have bought in the past. What puzzled me was the large number of empty collections I had. I also had some collections starting with special characters (keeps them up top when organized alphabetically) appear so I know that shouldn't be coming from Kobo. There was also a higher number of collections present than existed prior to the reset. So how do collections survive a reset?

I just logged in with a new Kobo account and no collections appeared.

Collections come from you. You create them by some method and put the books into them. The creation can be manual on the device, using calibre or an automatic method posted here.

Once the collections created, they are synced to the Kobo server. With the names of the purchased books that are in them. No details of sideloaded books are synced to the server.

All that means is that after a factory reset, the collections will be synced back to the device. But, the only books in them will be ones you have purchased from Kobo and synced.
