A way to translate Kindle's firmware
Hello everybody,
I would like to translate the Kindle 4 firmware to my language. To do so, I need a program I can use for the process. I have tried a HexEditor, but the only thing that gave me was a stream of meaningless characters. Can somebody tell me, which program/tool can I use to translate the original firmware? |

It is not that simple. You first have to find all the strings in the jars under /opt/amazon/ebook/lib. Not all of these are translatable, though. You can REALLY mess up your kindle if you translate strings like "south" or "north". On the touch, we have blankets, pillows and wafs as well, but on the k4nt? Not sure...
Which file did you use the hex editor on? Last edited by aditya3098; 11-15-2012 at 08:47 AM. Reason: tpyogarhpilca eorrs |

I tried to open the last update-file, that I have downloaded. I guess I did it wrong, I guess I need the original file, translate that and step-by-step the others.

Update file? That hardly has any usefull stuff. It is an obfuscated signed binary archive that only contains the changes that occoured in that file. Use usbnet or something to get the files I mentioned...

If you have a Linux (or probably a Mac) machine you can mount those images on your non-Kindle machine and search/read whatever file you need for your work. |

It is pretty hard ( I dont think the k4 has the required localisation code. It is EXTREMELY easy to brick your kindle.
