Very pleased with Paperwhite
I've just returned from a wonderful 2 week holiday in Egypt to find my Kindle Paperwhite waiting for me, and I'm extremely pleased with it. I see no trace whatsoever of the colour tinge that some have reported; the screen appears to me to be pure white, with just the faint shadow cones visible in the bottom 1cm or so of the screen from the lighting LEDs.
The extra resolution really does make an appreciate difference, to my mind. The text is noticeably crisper, and I can read comfortably with a smaller font size than on the Touch. The slightly rough finish of the screen on the PW provides a much better tactile feedback than the completely smooth screen of the Touch, and the touchscreen works well. I love the Amazon case for the PW. It holds the device very securely, and the magnetic catch which automatically turns the PW on and off works very well. Top marks for it. A great improvement over the Touch. |

ditto. i got mine a week ago and reasonably happy with it. admittedly there's noticeable aberrations at the very bottom of the screen but for me it don't distract too much.
one thing i'll say is the 'paperwhite' thing is really only applicable during the day when the light helps to reduces the dull grey of an unlit e-ink screen. in darkness however the screen is not even approaching white with the light on...instead it takes on a sort of washed-out muddy hue unless you really crank the brightness up...in which case you're left with a very bright display that's no different from an lcd. i do notice the extra resolution especially if you reduce the text size. i find i can read stuff comfortably at much smaller text sizes than i could on my k3 or kdxg. but for me the bummer is amazon's typically shoddy software support. the pdf viewer is identical to the stunted one that comes with the touch. clunky zooming and no way to hold a zoom setting across pages. the refresh rate of the screen isn't fast enough to scroll about which is obviously the way they want you to interact with pdfs. time to read is really nice but it annoys me amazon are withholding this from earlier skews that are perfectly capable of implementing it. |

I love mine very much, and do not want to go back to my Kindle 4. I might get the case before Xmas, but for the time being it is in a Marware case which is doing a very nice job too so I am in no rush to order the Amazon case right now. The good thing on the Marware case is the possibility to hold it "on" one hand thanks to the hand strap, which is nice when reading in bed.
Harry, did you get a wifi or a 3G one ? |

I got the WiFi one. If I want to use 3G, I can do so via the "personal hotspot" on my iPhone.

I've had nothing but good things to say about my PW. I've been REALLY impressed by it. The way fonts look on it is great, the resolution makes a big difference for me.

Yes, I entirely agree. The increased resolution makes a big difference to the appearance of the fonts.

I also have the wifi version only for the same reason. And Harry, I agree with you 100% about the Paperwhite. It is a fantastic product and I have been quite surprised at the level of criticism it has received. The Poll on mobileread showed something like 25% dissatisfaction last time I checked, a rate I find hard to believe. I'm sure some people have received defective products, but I also wonder if nitpicking exacerbated by extremely high expectations driven to unrealistic levels by pre-launch publicity has not been a contributor.
I am very happy with my paperwhite which I received early October. No, it is not perfect, but it is very very good and the best e-ink reader I have ever used by a wide margin. |
