On an author page in the kindle book shop a new icon has been added to allow for the following of an author. What does it mean to follow an author? What does the following icon do?

That feature has been available for a while. If you choose to sign up, Amazon will notify you when the author releases a new book.

Yes. After you press "follow," the button will change to "following." To un-follow, just press the button on the author page again.

I'm not sure it's worth following JRR Tolkien though (among the authors Amazon offers me). He's probably not going to write any new books any time soon.

He's released a lot more books since dying than he ever did while he was alive (seriously).
