Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

Hey guys,

I just finished reading my first 'steampunk' novel, Boneshaker (The Clockwork Century, #1) by Cherie Priest.

While it wasn't brilliant, I would probably give it 3.5 stars.

The world created is fantastic and original. The story didn't pay off as much as I'd hoped and the scope wasn't as big as expected, but still a great read and I think the sequels will expand the world much more so.

The setting is an alternative 1880s (?) in Seattle and the civil war is still going and there are zeppelin pirates and zombies and various other things...it's better than what is sounds.

If you've ever been interested in this genre, definitely check it out.

It's a good book. There are a lot of interesting books out in the steampunk genre lately.

You might want to check out Gordon Dahlquist's "The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters", Meljean Brook's "The Iron Duke", T. Aaron Payton's "The Constantine Affliction", Pip Ballantine & Tee Morris' "Phoenix Rising", Steven Harper's "The Doomsday Vault", Gail Carriger's "Soulless". Scott Westerfeld's "Leviathan", and Chris Wooding's "Retribution Falls".

I read a steampunk short story anthology and I learned that all steampunk stories must use the word "clockwork" or "clockworks" at least once.

Hmm thanks, this was on my short list of books to read a couple of years ago, but then it slid off the charts so to speak and I never read it. You've put it back on my radar.

I love steampunk and agree with you on this one. The beginning of the book really sucked me into it, I love the world she created... but I started losing interest afterwards as I found the characters to feel like they're more in the background that the world itself. It's as if the characters in it are actually the background, and the world itself is the main character.... and I just found it hard to care about anyone at the end.

That's right.
And it kind of turned into this boring dungeon crawl as well.

There was much more to offer above ground.
